Creative Hall Passes

When I was in high school, hall passes were not really required because the staff knew every student. But one teacher wanted to discourage the many students who wanted out of class to go to the bathroom, so he made us carry a toilet seat when we asked to go. Fast forward forty years, and most larger high schools require a hall pass for every student who is not in class during class time. Teachers have created large, embarrassing, and difficult hall passes of all kinds to try to limit bathroom breaks to those who really need to go. You have to have your documents for the administrators and hall monitors who watch for kids in the hall. Schools have grown so large that the people who run the schools don't know most of the kids, therefore one-size-fits-all rules have replaced commonsense supervision.

Also, schools have grown so large that it takes every second of the time between classes to get to the other side of the building. No time to go to the bathroom between classes, and you'd have to wait in line even if your classes were nearby.

I never understood hall passes. If you have to go, leave the room quietly and return the same way. What ever happened to the gently raised arm?
