Pretty confident that it is Japanese and not Chinese. The characters are Japanese. Maybe it is a Chinese book on how to read in Japanese?

@antoine It's Chinese. Japanese Kanji uses the same characters, of course, but there is Chinese pinyin next to the characters for pronunciation. yi-er-san rather than yichi-ni-whatever.
