I was doing a little reverse engineering of a circuit board from Jack Deville - taking each component off and tracing the connections to get an idea how the board worked, and under the main chip was a message 'Concede Defeat, Retain Pride'. I can't imagine too many people would see that, but it made my day.
I'm certain you're right. I've used the peeler and the corer/wedge cutter as separate tools - never saw them together like that. My guess is it was used in early larger-scale baking operations.
Robin Jones may have it... it looks a lot like a thermometer well. But - it also looks a whole lot like an oil pan drain plug to me (the lighter colored core would be a magnet for gathering metal bits not caught by the filter)
Thanks! I'm a big neatorama fan... it gives me lots of stuff to bring up at the dinner table (hey, guess what I saw while I was supposed to be working...)
Not completely certain it would help... my wife was asking for Oxfords @ one of the big name shoe stores... and neither the salesperson nor the manager knew what those were.
It's an insulated ground connnection for an old motorized axle... likely part of a grain mill, where static electricity could be explosive. The glass insulator works as a bushing, where it can ride on the axle... and the coiled spring maintains contact to the end of the axle for electrical connection. A copper ground line is connected to the nut at the top. I made this up, but it works in my head...
