Well if you have any questions I'm actually a cross country tour guide. The Black Hills area is definitely beautiful. You'll also be only a couple hours from Devils Tower National Monument which is one of my absolute most favorite places. This is definitely one of the best ways to wake up. http://instagram.com/p/O_mTmAEgSx/
That's more of the side side than the backside if you're going off the traditional viewing angle. The backside would actually resemble what Mount Rushmore looked like before the carving or the canyon that contains the Hall of Records.
There's also an awesome view from Mount Coolidge Fire Tower in Custer State Park, though easiest with binoculars, of Mount Rushmore, Crazy horse, the Needles and the Badlands.
Large cities like NYC definitely throw this chart off. I live in the Finger Lakes and have had two deer hit me (yes, both jumped into my car) in the the last three years. There's a 20 minute drive I make a few times a week that I'll see 10-15 deer on average either crossing the road or directly next to it.
