Portland Restauranteur Makes Face Shield From Menu Folder

A restaurant owner in Portland, Oregon is making news for being inventive with the use of plastic menu holders.

Min Trahn, owner of Butterfly Belly Asian Cuisine, saw that face shields are in short supply and realized he had just the thing to make some on his own.
He took a look at his laminated restaurant menu folders and saw they could be transformed into face shields.

This may not look like a cutting-edge design, but you have to admit it is original. We applaud everyone who is out there actively trying to make a difference and help people. Now is the time to get creative and resourceful.

A Desperate Mothers' Prayer

As many of us our navigate the new normal of homeschooling our children, I am grateful to the village of moms who send me hilarious videos and memes to help me get through the day. I normally don't share them with everyone, but this one was too good to keep to myself.

I big shout out and thank you to this comedian who created the Desperate Mother's Prayer. Thank you Desperate Mom (also known as Brandalyn Shropshire)! Thank you!

Malaysian Government Apologizes For Telling Wives Not To Nag

In what can only be described as a really terrible public service announcement, the Malaysian government recently advised women to wear makeup, dress nicely, and avoid nagging. A short time later they were forced to retract that advice and apologize for their sexist comments.

The Malaysian government was forced to apologize after its Women's Development Department published a series of sexist "tips" to help deal with home quarantine, like advising women to continue to wear makeup and to "avoid nagging."
The campaign was met with fierce backlash, and the posts have since been deleted from the department's social media account.
One of the biggest criticisms was that the government body charged with supporting women appeared to be ignoring concerns about a rise in domestic violence that may accompany stay-at-home orders to focus on things like how women should dress.

The Women's Development Department director-general claims they were just trying to send out positive messages to woman during this time of crisis.

Truck Carrying Toilet Paper Goes Up In Flames

A truck, carrying a load of toilet paper, sadly caught fire in Texas. The good news, the driver of the truck appears to be okay. The bad news, the toilet paper did not survive.

The toilet paper, which appeared to be large rolls typical of commercial use, was scattered across the roadway. TxDOT officials said the tractor-trailer and the load of toilet paper "burned extensively," estimating it would take authorities "some time" to clean up.

My heart aches for the loss of so much toilet paper.

Pacific Northwest Photographer Captures Social Distancing Moments

Skylar Bird, a photographer from the Pacific Northwest, is busy social distancing all while continuing to capture beautiful family moments. This time, however, those moments are through glass. She is calling it the Social Distancing Project.

South Sound photographer Skylar Bird is in the midst of a special project: family photo sessions - but with precautions, of course. Bird photographed moms, dads, and kids through their front windows...no contact at all. Despite the separation, Bird captured precious moments and documented history as the country commits to social distancing and staying at home.

Thank you to the photographers who remind us that, during even the darkest days, there is still beauty and laughter to be found in the world.

Man Proposes in Front Of Makeshift Eiffel Tower Because Paris Trip Was Canceled

What do you do when your perfect proposal is thwarted by world events? You bring Paris and the Eiffel Tower to Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Erika said "Luke and I had a big trip planned for Paris to see my sister who lives there. We decided literally the day before our plane left to cancel the trip in order to keep ourselves and others safe."
So instead, Luke decided to bring Paris to Fredericksburg and continue with the engagement as planned.
He drew the Eiffel Tower and proposed underneath.
"He took me to the alley leading to Market Square where he had drawn a big picture of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe in chalk," Erika explained.

Nice artwork Luke!

Many congratulations to the happy couple!

Dog Delivers Wine Curbside

A winery in Maryland has gotten creative with their curbside wine delivery. Stone House Urban Winery has enlisted the help of 75-pound brindle boxer named Soda Pup. The winery believes it is a way to spread joy and wine all at the same time.

“We’ve had people call in just specifically to have soda pup bring wine out to them. people who have never even been here before,” Yata adds.
It’s bringing people together but not too close together.
Yata jumped online and found a nifty little backpack. They pack the wine in the pockets and a treat in there so Pup gets something out of it.

Don't worry, Soda Pup isn't carrying too much on his back. His little backpack only holds two bottles at a time. His owner says they are also giving him plenty of breaks.

High School Robotics Team Makes Personal Protective Equipment

School may be out, but that hasn't stopped a high school robotics team in Camas, Washington from putting their skills to go use. Team Mean Machine has been busy designing and creating Personal Protective Equipment to donate to hospitals.

Students are working from home, using the team's laser cutters and 3D printers to create eye shields and face masks. So far, they've created and donated 550 eye shields to PeaceHealth and Legacy Health. They are finalizing their designs for face masks.
Students say this is what the robotics team has trained them for. Now, they're able to help in a time of crisis.

Team Mean Machine may not have been able to compete in the robotics competition this year, but they are 1st place winners in our book! Go Team Mean Machine!

London's Abbey Road Gets A Facelift

One of the most iconic streets in the world just got a little makeover.

London's iconic Abbey Road, which is normally a tourist magnet thanks to its appearance on the Beatles album cover of the same name, is now empty as locals hunker down inside.
That has provided a rare opportunity for municipal employees in the UK capital to give the famous crossing a new coat of paint.

Stay home, stay safe, and let public works step in and beautify the place appears to be the new UK motto. Thank you municipal employees for brightening our day with a little paint.

Portland, Oregon Residents Cheer On Health Care Workers

Little acts of kindness are everywhere. When the mayor of Portland, Oregon called upon residents to thank health care workers they answered.

Residents in Portland responded and came out of their homes -- keeping a safe distance of course -- to recognize health care workers.
They clapped and banged metal lids together to sound their support.

Towns outside the city limits also participated. The mayor hopes that this little act of gratitude continues to expand and actually becomes a nightly event.

Thank you health care providers! We appreciate you!

Kindness In The Form of Sack Lunches

Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch? Those cynical people haven't been paying attention to all the kind acts taking place around the country.

An anonymous neighborhood mom in Maryland has been setting up a table and leaving sack lunches for people,

A sign on the table reads, “For anyone who needs it...I will be leaving some healthy sack lunches on this table for you if you are hungry and need to eat. Made with love by a neighborhood mom in a clean and sanitized kitchen.”

This little act of goodwill is helping local families and neighbors struggle a little less. Thank you anonymous neighborhood mom in Maryland! You rock!

Archaeology Student Makes Amazing Discovery

Many of us have taken guided tours of museums, but how many of us have discovered hidden treasures on those tours? Back in 2017, Italian archaeology student and PhD candidate, Vottoria Dall'Armellina was on a guided tour of Saint Lazarus Monastery. She came across something really unusual in a case. A metal sword that looked like piece of weaponry she had seen in her studies.

"I noticed it immediately," she told CNN. The sword was labeled as a medieval artifact, but Dall'Armellina had a hunch that the object was much older than that.

Other researchers were skeptical at first, but after spending two years studying the sword she discovered she was right. The weapon is one of the oldest swords ever found and is estimated to have been created over 5000 years ago.

Now You (and your kids) Can Lunch and Doodle With Mo Willems!

Don't let the pigeon drive the bus, but do invite him over for a virtual lunch. The Kennedy Center is posting daily videos of Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems!

Mo Willems invites YOU into his studio every day for his LUNCH DOODLE. Learners worldwide can draw, doodle and explore new ways of writing by visiting Mo’s studio virtually once a day for the next few weeks. Grab some paper and pencils, pens, or crayons and join Mo to explore ways of writing and making together.

I don't know who is more excited about this, me or my kids. Okay, it's me. I have been in love with Mo Willems since my kids were little NeatoBambinos. His writing is not only touching and funny, but he purposely makes his art accessible to kids. He actually encourages kids to copy and expand on his characters. Hands down, he is probably one of my favorite children's book authors of all time.

Who's ready for lunch!
