Photos Capture the Individuality Residents Infuse in Their Identical, One-Room Apartments

Fourth Floor, Apartment #22: Don Lukas (An alias as he preferred anonymity), lives with his girlfriend.

Bogdan Gîrbovan is a Romanian photographer living in Bucharest. The Bucharest apartment building pictured here was built in 1966 during a communist regime, in which individual expression was discouraged. These identical, one-room boxes that comprise the homes in the building were built to emphasize that idea.

Gîrbovan, who lives on the 10th floor of the building, created this brilliant series that features residents of the building posing in their homes. His intent in part was to illustrate the differences that emerge in such a uniform environment. The photos are a testament to the creativity and unique nature of people, across all cultural and economic strata.

See the full series by Gîrbovan and read some of his views on the project here.

Sixth Floor, Apartment #32. This resident is a public figure who refused to give her name or to show her face in the photograph. She is a temporary tenant, as opposed to other residents who own their rooms.

Fifth Floor, Apartment #27. Mrs. Suhariuc Ioana is retired. She has lived in this space since 1967, living by herself since 1982. She owns her room.

The Greens Prepare Strange Recipes From The 50s

You've probably heard about strange recipes from the 40s and 50s, dishes like lime cheese salad, lobster relish or ham and banana hollandaise that seem too repulsive to eat.

Well, not all retro recipes are repulsive, nor do they all call for Jell-O gelatin, because as Hank and Katherine Green from the vlogbrothers YouTube channel discovered some are just plain bland!

Thankfully Hank and Katherine are adventurous eaters willing to make, and taste test, some of the strange recipes found in a neat old newspaper clipping cookbook Katherine inherited from her grandmother.

How People in the 1960s Thought We'd Dance in the Future

(Video Link)

1966 saw the premier and demise of Raumpatrouille--Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion. In English, that's Space Patrol--The Fantastic Adventures of the Spaceship Orion.

This short-lived science fiction TV show has been called the "German Star Trek." For that era, Space Patrol was a remarkably high production value series with richly developed characters.

One scene shows a group of people dancing. As you can see, the choreographers predicted how we would be dancing now in 2016 with amazingly precise prescience. It's like looking into any modern nightclub.

Woman Finds Venomous Snake Behind Her Refrigerator

And meanwhile, in Australia... a woman in Adelaide had a shock when she saw a snake peep out at her from behind her fridge. She immediately called Snake Catchers Adelaide, a local service that could trap the creature. What was behind the appliance was the second most venemous land snake in the world: the Eastern brown snake, also known for its speed and aggressive nature.

As it turned out, Rolly from Snake Catchers Adelaide suspected the snake was a pregnant female, so he kept it for a few days. His suspicions were confirmed when the snake shed her skin and laid approximately 14 eggs, which he estimates will hatch in March. See a video about this below, and see Snake Catchers Adelaide's Facebook post about the incident here.

Seeing the World Through an Animal's Gaze

Hungarian photographer Flora Borsi's (previously at Neatorama) series "Animeyed" features these captivating images of animal's eyes layered in place over the beautiful Borsi's face. The result is arresting animal/human hybrid photographs that evoke a feeling of fantastic mythological creatures.

Shown here are two of the most conventional animals used in the series; see more exotic images featuring blowfish and other aquatic creatures, snakes and more at Borsi's Behance site. Via Laughing Squid

Adam Driver Cat Lives

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the top grossing movie of all time in the U.S. and Canada. Girls is a popular HBO show going into its sixth season. Adam Driver happens to star in both. He also made his mark in Inside Llewyn Davis, J. Edgar, and a number of indies. He's essentially an "It Boy" of the moment.

But let me introduce you to one sweet soul who couldn't care less: Adam Driver Cat. There he hangs, adorably big-eared and intense, at the Monmouth County SPCA, waiting to be adopted. He doesn't care about your lightsabers or Chewie action figures. He wants a forever home. Hopefully, looking like a movie star will help him in this endeavor.

I Made This Macross II Lamp

For the past few years, I've been teaching myself carpentry and related crafts in order to prepare myself for the practical skills of home ownership, as well as be creative. Among less colorful pieces of usable furniture, I've made a My Little Pony cabinet, a Ninja High School lamp, and a One Week Friends light. My latest DIY project is a lamp inspired by Macross II: Lovers Again, one of my favorite animes.

The lamp consists of 3 lights inside a box cabinet with a figure of Ishtar, one of the main characters of the series, rotating on a disco ball motor.

So get this hot item before it ends up on someone else's porch. Be a part of the decorating trend that Megan Garber of The Atlantic calls "shabby chic."

You want dents? Those cost extra.

Finally! A Toilet for Those of Us on the Go

(Photo: 4x4 forum)

Let there be much wailing and gnashing of teeth, for I have discovered this brilliant invention only after Christmas is long over. Otherwise, I would have given these toilets to everyone in my family.

I am, alas, unable to find out any information about this brilliant invention. It's like the previously mentioned Bumper Dumper, which attaches to a trailer hitch. Unlike the Bumper Dumper, though, you do have to stop traveling to use this potty.

This is the ideal solution for people who are camping or are having trouble finding a public restroom. Just carry this portable toilet seat with you. When you need to to go, find a car and get to work.

Can You Tell Why People Are Drawn To This Hot Dog Challenge?

Most hot dog challenges involve shoving dozens of hot dogs down your throat in front of a cheering crowd, but this video by Howard Lee of Aberystwyth, Wales features a different kind of hot dog challenge.

The challenge here is to figure out which hot dog is real and which is a photo realistic drawing:

And here's a collection of Howard's 10 most impressive, photo realistic illustrations complete with time lapse of the drawing process, to further showcase Howard's amazing drawing skills.

Actor Shaves Right Side of His Body

Will Forte is an actor on the TV show The Last Man on Earth. He recently showed up at celebrity parties in Los Angeles in a dashing new look. It looks like the right side of his body is shaved (we see only his head, but I'm extrapolating from extant data. That's called science).

The sharp contrast between Forte's character's shaggy look on the post-apocalyptic show set in the future and the carefully managed and bounded world of the pre-apocalyptic present is a thoughtful commentary on the fragility of what we refer to as civilization, as well as cool-looking.

Actors Who Received Oscar Nods For Less Than 20 Minutes Of Screen Time

Some stars can't get an Oscar nod to save their life, and no matter how many blockbuster movies they star in, or how brightly they shine in the hearts of their fans, the Academy Award eludes them.

And then there are actors like Anthony Hopkins, Ingrid Bergman and Judi Dench who don't need to be on screen for long to steal the show from their fellow stars, receiving Oscar nominations for less than 20 minutes of screen time.

Anthony Hopkins appeared in Silence Of The Lambs for less than 16 minutes and yet he took home a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Hannibal.

Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar for her performance in Murder On The Orient Express, a film in which she played a pivotal role despite only being on camera for just over fourteen minutes.

But the award for briefest appearance goes to Judi Dench, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare In Love, which amounted to a whopping 8 minutes of screen time.

Here she is in 1999 accepting the award, which was presented by Robin Williams:

Alan Rickman's Final Role Was Narrating a Tortoise Eating a Strawberry

(Video Link)

Actor Alan Rickman's recent death caused an outpouring of grief as fans fondly remembered his performances in Galaxy Quest, Harry Potter, and Die Hard. His final role, though, may soon rival those.

Before he died, Rickman recorded a voice-over describing a tortoise eating a strawberry. This was a promotional ad for the charities Save the Children and the Refugee Council. For every view of the video on YouTube, those charities receive a small payment.

It's a fundraising system called OneClickGiving. ABC News describes how the college students who created it were able to recruit Rickman:

Through a connection, they were able to get Rickman onboard and steal an hour of his time for the viral project.

Oliver Phillips, OneClickGiving founder, told the BBC Rickman was kind and generous.

"He could not have been more kind and generous, letting us in, welcoming us, asking us how university was going, he was really great throughout," Mr Phillips said.

When the Daleks Attacked Harry Potter

(Video Link)

The Harry Potter film series had some of the best actors in Britain -including David Tennant just before he was cast as The Doctor. While it's always fun to imagine actors playing their most famous roles in their other films, it's particularly easy with David Tennant, since the Tenth Doctor once wiped his memory so he thought he was human just to hide out from a particularly evil family of aliens.

This mashup with Harry Potter is perfect for those who love imagining that Bartleby Couch Jr. is just a strange and confused Doctor in hiding.

Archaeologists Find Prosthetic Foot Shaped Like a Horse's Hoof

(Images: Chinese Archaeology)

Archaeologists excavating a 2,200-year old tomb in Turpan, China, have found a unique prosthetic leg design. It was used by man who appeared to have a deformed leg. He was unable to straighten the knee joint, which rested in the socket of the prosthesis. The base isn't shaped like a human foot, but a horse's hoof. Live Science quotes the journal Chinese Archaeology:

The prosthetic leg was "made of poplar wood; it has seven holes along the two sides with leather tapes for attaching it to the deformed leg," the archaeologists wrote. "The lower part of the prosthetic leg is rendered into a cylindrical shape, wrapped with a scrapped ox horn and tipped with a horsehoof, which is meant to augment its adhesion and abrasion."

"The severe wear of the top implies that it has been in use for a long time," they added.
