Actually, another reader discovered that the "L" and "R" were used as left and right turn signs on the Yellowstone Trail. A followup post is in the works.

p.s. - It turns out that 50 years ago my childhood home in MN was on the Yellowstone Trail. Amazing coincidence.

I wonder if mosquitos actually "suck" the blood. They don't have diaphragms; do they have other muscles that create negative pressure - or do they rely on the intravascular pressure of the victim to move the blood? Anyone know?

I would guess that it had previously been opened, some jam removed, and it was recapped while warm air was on top of the jam. When it chilled in the refrigerator, the jam contracted, and the trapped air cooled and contracted, pulling up the jam.

But I can't see any air at the top.

Here's an idea! The Neatoshop has a variety of cleverly designed wireless computer mice that have a little thingy on the top called a "scroll wheel" that lets you pass over items on a page that are of no interest, or that you already know, or that are unpleasant to read.
