I think the point here is that it is not paint. Paint may be the story, but it need-not be the culprit. The evenness of the colouring and the fact that you can still see all of the critter's natural markings suggests something like a photosynthesizing micro-organism. That, or it's just a ground-level special effect that's repeatable on anyone's computer.
