Overly Honest Methods

Scientists share the funny fine print of experiments and studies, or what should have been included in their methods sections, at Twitter. These are tagged with #overlyhonestmethods if you want to contribute yours. Link -via Holy Kaw!

Two Cats, One Bowl

(YouTube link)

These cats find it hard to share one bowl. Still, they are rather civil about it. Such situations often involve growling, slapping, and hissing. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Insect Eye Art

You see that beetle on her eye? That's a Longhorn Beetle, and, though it's dead, that's still a real beetle glued to her face. Pixie Cold is an artist who focuses mainly on eye and face art. This picture, called Toxic Meet, is just the first part of her new butterfly and bug series.

Star Trek: TNG Test Footage

(YouTube link)

Costume, hair, and makeup test footage is necessary, but with the right music, can be super creepy. But at least we get a look at a some of the "looks" that might have been on Star Trek: The Next Generation  and, fortunately, were not. I knew that Geordi's vision visor was based on those hair thingys, and now it's been proven! Doesn't Wil look awful young? -via io9

Bunny Dresses

Dress your bunny rabbit in the latest bunny fashions from Annie Elle Bunnies! Annie was a little shy about sharing her bunny-dressing hobby, but got such a kind reception that she's opened an Etsy shop and already has plenty of orders to keep her busy. One basic style fits most size bunnies, and will fit  dogs and cats, too! There are a variety of colors and trim available. Link -via reddit

Tauntaun Snow Rider

The tauntaun is a mysterious creature from the far reaches of the galaxy. Its Homeworld- Hoth, hair color- white, designation- non sentient, average adult height- 1.3 to 2 meters, and the amount of awesomeness derived from homemade snow-creature? Infinite.

It's hard to say who goes home with the Star Wars parenting award this year, but it really comes down to this post and one other- both including tauntauns.

Headlight Eyepatch

Sometimes even the saltiest sea dog has to go on land. But no self-respecting pirate should go without this Headlight Eyepatch. (What kind of headlights do pirates use? Yaargon, of course!)

It's the latest Carmichael Creative Project (who did it just for creativity's sake): Link - Thanks Maria!

Star Wars Taxidermy

Star Wars taxidermy. If you are looking to start a Kickstarter campaign but have a limited imagination, then Tauntr has a good idea for you. Unfortunately these photos are photoshopped, but maybe someone can make this a reality in the future.

We can't help you out on where to find the Rancors or the Wampas, but hey I will write a blog post for you once you do! Try looking on Hoth or Dathomir, once you manage to build that space ship. Who wants a Bantha head for their living room?

The Emancipation Proclamation

Today, January 1, 2013,  is the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. And some are still arguing over the meaning of that document to this day. It was a momentous act, and President Abraham Lincoln knew it as he signed it.

What the proclamation did—and did not do—has been a matter of debate ever since.  Many still stubbornly insist that the Emancipation Proclamation freed no one—that it proved utterly and cynically toothless, applying only to a region in which Lincoln had no authority to proclaim anything. It was meant only to keep England from recognizing the Confederacy, go these arguments. Lincoln had no real compassion for slaves; only for restoration of the Union.

The truth is, some 50,000 enslaved people in Confederate territory immediately gained their freedom on Jan. 1, most along the coast of the Carolinas. In the years that followed, moreover, Union troops, armed with miniature copies of the proclamation printed for distribution to dubious Southern slave owners, liberated tens of thousands more wherever they marched. And emboldened by word of the official imprimatur, yet tens of thousands of additional slaves bravely abandoned their bondage on their own, offering their services to the Union when they reached federal lines.

As the war progressed, the Emancipation Proclamation became effective in more areas. And the symbolism of the document meant even more, as it changed the perceived philosophy of the Civil War and of the United States itself. Read the story of the document at The Daily Beast. Link

Trained Mice Performing Amazing Tricks

We all know mice are clever enough to sneak their way into our houses and eat our food, but their ability to learn tricks is totally underrated.

Mouse Agility knows what mice are truly capable of, and they've been training mice to do things like pay for a treat, play Connect Four or slam dunk a tiny basketball since the 90s.

If mice paid for all the food they took people probably wouldn't hate having them in their homes.

Amazingly Detailed Eggshell Sculptures

Chinese artist Wen Fuliang doesn't see eggshells as trash, he sees them as a sculptural medium. His incredible sculpting skills began when he was laid off from his job as a woodcarver, and now he sees eggs as more than just an ingredient in Fu Yung.

Here's more on these delicate works of art:

Using chicken, goose and duck eggs, he empties the content of the eggs with a syringe, before using a fine diamond bit on an electric rotary tool to delicately carve the designs on the intricate shells.

The process, according to The Daily Mail, is “incredibly time-consuming”, and requires Fuliang to gently secure the eggshell in one hand, and skillfully use the rotary tool in the other.
