Jim Ochsner's Comments

My maternal grandmother's family lives in nearby Smithtown. We visited St. Martins many times when vacationing with my family as a youngster. We even stayed a few nights at a B and B there. The high tides are amazing. Just look at where the water line is in the above photo and imagine if later filling the cave. The water is quite cold due to the Labrador Current. Brrr.

If memory serves me, no one on WKRP smoked. Back when I dabbled in FM radio it was common, to anesthetize our vocal cords as I used to say. We had a reggae show DJ and you can guess what he smoked. As far as I know the smoke didn't harm the equipment. We had the old two turntables, cart machines, and such. I guess the modern digital stuff would fare better without it.

Most cool. Thank you for posting this. I have passed it on to my daughter and her husband who are the parents of 8 month old twin girls. They are dealing with these changes X2.

Reminds me of the time we "played tourist" and took our 4 kids to The North Pole/Santa's Workshop near Lake Placid NY. Fun times. I guess it is still in operation since 1949.

Heck. I did that in 7th grade. Was playing for my home room intramural team. Never played before. Got a rebound and shot it up back into the basket. Whoops. Wrong basket. Was I ever embarrassed.

When I was the science lab technician for the local college we provided classes with cheap scientific calculators for student use. I couldn't replace them fast enough. The college kids took them as if they were merely a piece of paper. I finally convinced my boss that students had cell phones that could do the same thing. We finally put an end to free calculators.

Reminds me of a time when traveling on I-81 south of Watertown NY. I was in a long straight stretch and could see in my rear view mirror these cars coming up on me very very fast. About a half a dozen new Corvettes flew by me like I was standing still. Wondered what that was all about, but couldn't help think it was some sort of cannon-ball run.

I never really thought about it, but I did that a couple times myself. Once after I got out of the Army and went back to college, and another time between jobs just before I got married. Three of my four children did it at least one time each. It's nice that parents can provide that safe haven.

Interesting. Back when I was teaching high school biology a student gave me a dead preserved piranha. I would demonstrate the sharpness of the teeth by dragging a sheet of paper across the lower teeth. The paper tore easily. No, I did not ask the student where he got the stuffed fish.

Remembering when during WW2 a lot of deliveries, etc. were made by horse draw wagons. We had a nice paved low traffic street to play on. Hated when the horses forced us to move our activity.
