Yep, I'm pretty sure as well that it had to do with the exposure. The very first cameras invented in the late 1820's often took hours, if not days to expose and image. (And you can look that up easily) Not to say that this philosophy didn't exist in some form, but smiling + an incredible exposure time did not go hand in hand.
Never knew this. I always thought they didn't smile because they would have to hold it for the entire exposure time, risking the chance of blurriness in the picture.
I think his genitals are actually there but the dude is so obese that his belly apron is covering them up. If you look at it that way then this really is quite accurate.
