One of the great mistakes of art like this today is that it tries to say profound things from deep inside the freak show. It doesn't lead to a feeling of uplift or enlightenment or even the contentment of a good dinner. It just digs deeper into our current debasement. It's going to be a very hard slog back to the surface.
