Grease - I've only watched it in parts, never the entire movie. I may have to watch it some day. Summer Nights is one of my favorite songs from a musical.
IMO, the best romance movie from my birth year should've been Animal House.
Pfft, half of those on the "underrated" list aren't underrated. I think The Sword in the Stone should be a top 5. Nobody I know knows it, few have even watched it, but it's such a gem. I can still sing the songs, remember the lines, and just laugh out loud while watching that forgotten animated masterpiece.
In my first year of gainful employment after college (1997), I actually received a Nigerian scam letter. No, it wasn't an email, but an actual letter sent via snail mail to our company, addressed to my position, but not to my name personally.
I was naive enough to show some interest in this letter. Wow, if I help this poor Nigerian politician move his money out of the country, I could pocket as much as six million in commission! I showed it to my boss, he laughed at the letter and at me for believing in it.
That was the last time I half-trusted a scam. Boy, did I dodge a bullet on that one!
Off topic. I love Damn Interesting. Great articles, great podcast. That's where I first heard Simon Whistler's voice before I found out he's a prolific Youtuber.
Romcoms may be formulaic but they're not all Hollywood sappy stories. One of the best romcoms of the last decade is 500 Days of Summer but it didn't have the normal "happy ending".
Even formulaic romcoms can be different if it's less about fairytale stories and more about "normal" people, especially if it is well-acted. Take Miles Teller (of Whiplash fame). He had two romcoms, The Spectacular Now and Two Night Stand. He makes both romantic movies watchable. Or how about Daniel Radcliffe? He was brilliant in the rather sappy romcom "The F Word".
For every forgettable Katherine Heigl romcom, there's a good one by Zoe Kazan. Don't sell the genre short just yet.
I stand corrected! BTW, it also seems fishy for villagers to be wasting precious horses for fish. Weren't horses brought by the Europeans to South America? That would be quite expensive.
They had me at "Martial arts sex comedy". For a pimply-faced teenager, it was an anime I can't resist. From girl-type Ranma who doesn't care if she's topless while walking about, to Shampoo throwing her naked self to her her betrothed, we have fan service aplenty. I wish they had more Nabiki fanservice aside from the DoCo MVs.
And since the premise is so weird, they even had an opening narration before each episode early in the series. (When Ranma is splashed with cold water, he becomes a she.)
