Daniel Kim's Comments

I will attempt to clarify my earlier comment:
1. The behavior of the American who swallowed the pickled toe (shudder) reflects badly on the image of Americans traveling out-of-country.
2. The image that Americans project to the world has been in decline for many years, and so it is becoming more and more difficult to make Americans look worse.
3. The person in this story succeeded to make Americans look more boorish and uncivilized by his behavior, thus topping an already high performance bar.
4. This implies that his behavior was quite extreme in its offensiveness.

There is too much intervention during the experiment. Snails are sensitive to light, and so having people use flashlights on them during the night would change their behavior. Also, I don't know if snails are blind to ultraviolet light. If they are not, then their behavior will be quite atypical during the experiment. It is well known that the location of a snail or its velocity may be determined, but not both.

I don't see any obvious reference to La Llorona, the 'weeping woman' legend of the Southwest. According to legend, she searches for the children she drowned, and steals children near water. Oddly enough, Las Cruces, NM has a park named after her which is situated on the banks of the Rio Grande. A most inauspicious place for children to play.

The law of conservation of mass would say that that makes no sense. I would believe that one ton of landfilled paper sequesters maybe a third of a ton of carbon dioxide, since paper consists of carbon and many other elements, in addition to emissions related to harvest and processing from wood to paper. Still, your reply is funny.

Each ton of paper in landfills represents a considerable amount of carbon dioxide that is sequestered from the atmosphere, helping to reduce the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gas. It is good to know that landfills have a lot of paper in them.

Garrison Keillor on A Prairie Home Companion told a story about a person who would tell jokes, then throw popcorn at a bunch of duck to get them to 'laugh' at them.
