Holly's Comments

as somewhat of a youngster, i (sadly) have not seen any of his movies.. but that does not discount the sadness i felt when i heard he died yesterday. i am an avid buyer of his products (my refrigerator is stocked with like, 6 bottles of salad dressing.. lol) and in honor of him last night, i bought a pack of ginger-o's. if i'm not mistaken, he passed his product line to his daughter, who has established many products under the newman's own label herself. his legacy shall carry on, and he will definitely be missed.

i could be wrong on this one, but i read that they chose $700 billion because that's the max amount allowed to be spent without being questioned by the federal reserve.. or something like that...

even if 95% of us are questioning it....

and i don't expect to be taken absolutely for granted here, and i don't think i'm any more right than the rest of you. but the issue in this article is much more deep-seeded than a simple "men don't like to talk and women do."

it's another very superficial approach that doesn't look into "why" men shut down and women are the talkers. of course i know this is not the case in all situations, as some of you have already said your relatinoships are the exact opposite.

the most important thing to realize about stuff like this is that gender is a socialized phenomena. i was actually talking to my sister(not)-in-law about this the other day. from the moment we are born, our parents assign us to colors often associated with whatever sex organ you came out with. it's important to establish roles with your children, but not based on their having a penis or vagina.

i say gender is socialized for a couple reasons, but i will try to make this short as it relates to the article. men shut down and don't talk because that is what they were taught growing up. "sharing your feelings" is very much seen as a "girl" trait, something boys are harshly discouraged to express both by their parents and their peers. guys-- remember when you were little and you heard (probably many times) "big boys don't cry?" and gals-- remember when you were little and your mother told you to "just let it out?" there are many examples of these simple statements that have been pounded into our brains our entire lives, even well into adulthood. regardless of whether we grasp this phenomenon, it is nearly impossible to avoid in almost all situations, especially our day-to-day relationships. adults believe gender exists and they pass it to their children. and so on, and so on.

like i said, i'm not saying men and women don't have particular roles in life, because they do. i'm saying that their roles should not be based on the color blanket they were wrapped in as a newborn. communication is the key to understanding, and you don't even have to talk to communicate. actually, 90% of a message is non-verbal. i would think men "go silent" during confrontation because women were trained to be slightly condascending, and men don't like being talked down to. it's a power thing. but if you know how to properly communicate, men and women can have harmonious relationships without many problems. it's all in the approach. stay nice, highlight the positive, and NEVER use "you" language (YOU did this.. YOU did that). take it from a communications professional-- talking is very hard to do right. it takes a lot to ignore your own pride when talking to someone sometimes, but it is absolutely necessary to understand you are NOT always right.

aside from the immature banter-- regardless of whether this cheerleading squad made the "right" decision of dressing their showgirls in something a little more modest or not, there are still tens of thousands of other little girls around the country running around believing looks are their only positive characteristics. and those people who support this "freedom of expression" really have bigger problems on their hands than looking pretty.

and jimbo-- last time i checked, my stomach has not come anywhere close to my steering wheel. it's called "eating healthy and having dignity for oneself."

i don't think my statement was that overboard.. i mean, it's completely true what i said about male/female apparel. if you are a guy, i encourage you to walk into the juniors department of any retail store and really LOOK at the options we have to call "clothing". then walk over to YOUR section and compare. if you need to repeat the cycle to understand what i'm saying, feel free. that's why i would say men hate shopping: they have never had to go through the anguish of finding an outfit that fits in all the right places. you have never been bra shopping. have you ever worn a thong? have you worn high heels? have you plucked your eyebrows or shaved your legs? i would assume most of the answers to these questions are "no" because guess what? you've never had the social pressure of living up to any of that crap. i wouldn't consider myself a feminist, rather, someone who believes in absolute equality. i would stand up for a man in a split second if he was being put down by society, take for example all the "dumb husband" commercials. you know the ones... where the women in the commercial make the man out to be completely clueless and stupid. it's wrong and paints the wrong picture of a true man. same for women. they should not be treated as objects any more than men should not be treated as dumb animals. go ahead and call me a feminist, but i'm just standing up for my fellow females who know what the hell i'm talking about. if you're a guy, you have NO IDEA what i'm talking about (unless you've taken women studies classes or have engulfed yourself in equal rights) and have nothing to say to me.

jimbo, if they've got what? what is it that they've "GOT"? sex appeal? boobs? a va-jay-jay? sorry to reveal the secret, but ALL women have boobs and pink tacos. if you want to see women waggling their boobs in your face, there is an industry that generates 1/3 of the income on the internet. it's called "porn." check it out. it's hard enough to dress appropriately as a female and NOT be expected to show some amount of skin. clothing manufactureres make t-shirts and jeans for men, while they make skirts the size of belts and "shirts" that don't cover enough to be appropriate at grandma's house. it's hard enough to dress appropriately AND be appreciated by our male counterparts. just because you've "got it" doesn't mean you have to show it around like you don't have an ounce of respect for yourself. anyway, sorry to attack you. it's just the exact mentality you displayed that perpetuates the oppression of women. stop it, please. and i hope you don't treat your female counterparts with such disrespect.

adamG-- obama was a drug addict. and it's a psychological phenomena that most men have the desire to bang their mom (and vice versa with girls and their fathers). so, that doesn't really discredit darwin. it just re-establishes that he is, in fact, human.

i was absolutely shocked to read this.. and then i saw it was from the onion and wiped my brow with a huge *phew*.

a lot of being overweight these days (in addition to lack of activity) has to do with all the preservatives and additives in the foods themselves. people who aren't as well off have to buy cheaper food, both in price and quality, and are generally "more" obese than those with higher incomes. what i'm trying to say is, it's not as easy for some people to get healthy food. children who are overweight most likely have overweight parents, so it's not just "your child needs to excercise" it's "your entire family needs to change their eating habits." which is an entirely different problem in itself.. something the government can try to solve until their eyes bleed with no results. good luck, UK.
