Dave 20's Comments

Horrific? horrible? Not at all. Not that I'd do this to a cat in my care (nor would I have a cat in my care, but I digress...), but why is this so terrible? In a legal sense, the cat is the property of the owner, and the owner has the right to do with it as he/she pleases, within reason of course. Domestic cats have been bred as pets, and bred to look a particular way, so why is decorating a cat with tattoos any different than selectively breeding a cat to accentuate specific attributes? I can think of several breeds of dogs that have traits associated with their breeding which often require surgery to correct (or euthanasia in many cases)... I suppose breeding them that way in the first place is just as horrific?

Then, in the comments someone says that next big thing will be piercings, and someone else says babies with tattoos will be next... So wouldn't babies with pierced ears fall into the same category of someone getting a body mod without being capable of giving consent?

People can be so inconsistent sometimes, it makes me really wonder.

We had a huge light pillar night here (Sioux Falls, SD) last Thursday night/Friday morning. I wouldn't have seen it, but I had a late-night project that kept me at work until about 1am that night; it was a gorgeous show of light on my drive home.

The cool thing is that the color of the light pillar varies depending on what kind of light source it comes from; the colors varied from yellows to purples... It was very, very cool.

After driving home I grabbed a camera and tried to grab a few shots of it; my cheap little camera sucks about as badly as my photography skills, so they didn't turn out as well as what you see at other sites. I tweaked one in P-shop a bit and posted one on my blog; click on my name to take a look.

For a change? People hear about a handful of dirtbag CEO's, and automatically every other corporate officer is cut from the same cloth. Can we please use a little critical thinking now and then? Puhleeze?

I had a run-in with a psycho Canada goose last year... I rode my bike to work & back along the river. One day I'm passing by one of the geese's usual hangouts, and one of them decided it didn't like me riding through there. I'm zipping along at about 20mph, and the goose flew right at me; I was able to get a foot up high enough to catch the goose in the breast and keep it out of my face. Thankfully it was the goose that went rolling down the embankment, and not me.

Stupid geese.

A local pediatric orthopedic doctor we've worked with is named Dr. Walker.

Then there is the guy I knew in the military whose last name is Majeres (pronounced 'majors'); guess what rank he held... Major Majeres.

Oh, and then there is a local urologist named Dr. Johnson. He's got a great sense of humor; when a new performing arts center was built, he donated a bunch of money to the project, and wanted to have the bathrooms named in his honor. True story!

I've been a long-time Jalopnik reader/commenter, and Murilee Martin's DOTS is one of my favorite segments.Alameda is Murilee's adopted hometown, and has an amazing array of old cars that are still driven daily. I've tried to talk him into starting a DOTS Tourism enterprise, but so far he's not biting.

Another segment that he does (yes, Murilee is a guy) is PCH (Project Car Hell) where two (or more) ratty old cars are paired up and voted on, "where you choose the project that's the coolest... and most hellish!" Tons of fun (literally and figuratively!) Oh, and Murilee also does the coverage for the LeMons races, where $500 cars are run in 24 hour
endurance races.

Sadly, Gawker Media recently relegated Murilee to weekend-only duty as part of their cost cutting plan. Too bad because his posts are very well written and about the only thing that keeps me coming back. Guess that's one less thing distracting me from work during the week!

And maybe when they figure out this puzzle, they'll also figure out the cause of the Medieval Warm Period. But don't expect to hear anything about it if they determine the causes weren't anthropogenic.

I'm with mikerm19 & BlackTiger; the bigger problem with Walmart is their tactics with their vendors. At a former employer, I saw the fallout from Walmart Purchasing's heavy-handedness almost daily. They were ruthless in demanding ever-lower prices for goods, with the ever present threat of getting dropped as a vendor. The company I worked didn't sell directly to Walmart, but manufactured components for products that Walmart bought, and we were the secondary victims of Walmart; that heavy-handedness was passed on to us, and we ended up selling a lot of product at a loss just to keep the business. The Co. I worked for was one of the bigger players in our industry, so we were able to absorb the hit to a degree, but I know a lot of smaller competitors that ended up as roadkill as a result of Walmart.

That said, I do buy a few select things at Walmart, but am careful about what I buy, and avoid the cheap Chinese crap. They aren't making any money off of me.

While I liked this movie, and lots of things remind me of scenes from it, it's one that I don't share with my kids because the final resolution of the groundhog loop is for the main character ending up hopping into bed with his co-worker. That has just never sat well with me. Sure, it's something that happens all the time, but there are so many other things the producers could have focused on.

Wow; so many thin-skinned people here. What harm or foul is brought by asking if she can pray for her patient?

And asking to pray for a patient is a far cry from pushing her religion on her patient.

One thing I've wondered about these things... is the volume adjustable, or is it either on or off? There are some songs that are made to be played at high sound levels, but since that translates into large amounts of air being moved, how does it work when there's NO air being moved?

And if there's no air being moved, I'd guess that there can be no long-term damage to the eardrums as might happen with extended use of regular headphones. Correct, or no?
