M. S. K. Brown's Comments

I am an American, but I live outside Washington DC and have had ample time to observe tourists from all over the world. The European tourists usually have much better style sense and nicer shoes (leather shoes, not sneakers/trainers). The American tourists dress much more casually, sometimes in matching outfits (everyone wearing the same t-shirt, or in some cases everyone wearing the same outfit, or the boys wear one outfit and the girls another (this includes grown ups)).

Part of the rationale for the differences I have observed could be down to economics - the Europeans who can afford to travel to the states probably can also afford the expensive shoes.

Trader Joe's is now carrying frozen poutine. The french fries are frozen separately from the gravy and the curds. You cook the french fries in the oven and then gently heat the gravy and cheese packets in a pan of water. I make no promises as to its quality or how it compares to the real thing, I am just sharing the info.

1. I got Kinect Party when my son was 6 and if you can let yourself go and be silly it is fun to play. We also have Kinect sports, where you can take turns doing something like bowling. Both of those use the sensor. Using controllers, my son likes Angry Birds (but he likes Angry Birds everything so this is no surprise).

2. Trader Joe's makes a good deep dish pepperoni pizza. My only suggestion for cooking is to remove the pepperoni for the first 10 minutes of baking time, unless you like extremely crispy pepperoni. My kids like Amy's Organic cheese pizza, but one of them also thinks McDonalds has the best food in the entire world, so not sure this opinion is trustworthy (I myself like McDonalds, but I do not think it is the best food in the entire world).

2. RE going organic -it's a very personal choice and what is "right" for one person may not be "right" for another. With that being said...when we had kids I consciously made the decision to buy local and/or organic when possible. For me it is about knowing where my food comes from, knowing the growers, and eating in season. In my experience the food actually tastes better when you are eating it in season and it was jsut picked yesterday, at the peak of ripeness. Tomatoes that you find at the mega grocery store are ones which were bred to survive long trips and still look nice. Growers that are able to sell local can grow foods for flavor, rather than their ability to travel. If you have a CSA or something similar in your area, I recommend joining because it will introduce you to vegetables and fruit you might not normally select, and challenge you to figure out how to cook them. Or at least that is my experience. For me it is also important to support the local growers that are still around, because they choose to grow some unusual things and allow me to have more choice in my produce (for example, there are other types of carrots besides orange ones, but you might never know that if you only shopped at the regular grocery store). Are we healthier? I don't know, though I feel healthier just because i am eating more fruit and veg (and also locally grown poultry/meat). Finally, knowing that the food does not have pesticide residue in it or contains GMOs does make me feel better.
