Wisconsin Humane Society Gets Creative With Names

The Wisconsin Humane Society  in Milwaukee evidently grew tired of the same old names for their prospective adoptees and decided to get fancy. The interesting names may have been a good strategy, as two of the cats above have been adopted; Professor PuddinPop is the only one remaining.

Not pictured but also available at the shelter are Provolone, Wampus, Mighty Mouse and Morticia the cats. None of the dogs' names stand out like the cats; however on the bunny front, there are Coco Puff and Honey Bunny.

Visit the Wisconsin Humane Society website to keep up with their residents in need.

Extraordinary Ceilings from All Across the Globe

The phrase "staring at the ceiling" brings to mind an annoying episode of sleeplessness or possibly a vacant state of mind. Here are some ceilings that could liven up the old expression. Some are colored glass, some wood or molded plaster  strangely enough, one ceiling pictured below is made of over a million iridescent beetles. Whatever the materials, they are spectacular.

Mesmerizing Architectural Photography by Markus Studtmann

Berlin-based photographer Markus Studtmann dissects and reconstructs architectural images to produce the hypnotic art pieces you see here. He calls his process "painting with light." Studtmann, in addition to being an accomplished artist/photographer, is also a psychologist with a PhD in psychology. Perhaps it gives him an edge in making photos that produce visceral reactions and demand attention.

According to his website, Studtmann "loves the process of finding the perfect composition and experimenting in the digital darkroom to the sound of good music and the smell of tasty coffee in the air." Sounds like my kind of guy! If you're a photography enthusiast, be sure to visit Studtmann's website and his 500px site

Inherent Vice Trailer Released

YouTube Link

Fans of celebrated novelist Thomas Pynchon and revered film director Paul Thomas Anderson have been eagerly anticipating the film verson of Inherent Vice, the first Pynchon novel to be adapted to the screen. The wait is nearly over, and for now, fans have been provided with a trailer to satiate them.

Here is the official synopsis:

"When private eye Doc Sportello’s (Joaquin Phoenix) ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

It’s the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists... Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon"

With an impresssive cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio del Toro, Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon, many have high hopes that the film will deliver. What do you think of the trailer?

Nature by Needle

Meredith Woolnough is an Australian visual artist with a unique technique she employs to create these designs. Woolnough uses water-soluble fabric to make the intricate, nature-inspired creations shown here. The design is traced atop the water-soluble fabric, at which point Woolnough embroiders the tracing. Then the fabric is dissolved. The delicate form that remains is mounted in various ways; in clear resin or on paper, for example. The embroidery is done with a conventional sewing machine.

NYC Taxi Driver Pinup Calendar is Back

Now in its second year, the NYC Taxi Driver's calendar serves up hearty hunks of beefcake, as evidenced by the cover boy seen above. If the NYPD and FDNY can have charity pinup calendars, why not these hard working cabbies? If you've ever spent any time in NYC, you know that they go the extra mile to earn every dollar.

This year's calendar features the first husband and wife drivers, captured while having an impromptu picnic on the back of a cab. Say what you want about these models, but they all share one of the most attractive attributes in a person: a good sense of humor.

A portion of the sales go to University Settlement, which benefits immigrants and low-income families. Calendars are available for purchase here. -Via My Modern Met.

Kitten Tests the Boundaries of Older Cat, Finds them Strict

YouTube Link

This adorable kitten tries a stalking maneuver on the adult cat in his household and learns that it won't get him anywhere. In a move that reminds me of my young dog's interaction with my older dog, the kitten recoils after his foiled sneak attack and slips into "roly-poly-you-can't-resist-the-cute-I'm-throwing-down" mode, which also gets him nowhere. As a commenter on Tastefully Offensive said, "Kitten just needs to learn his place, and who's boss is all."

A Photographic Examination of the Japanese Robotics Industry

Photographer Luisa Whitton's series What About the Heart? documents her time spent in Japan with scientists working on humanoids, including Hiroshi Ishiguro, who constructed a copy of himself in robotic form. Her series is a contemplation of these exceedingly lifelike yet soulless automatons. Whitton elaborates,

"In the photographs, I am trying to subvert the traditional formula of portraiture and allure the audience into a debate on the boundaries that determine the dichotomy of the human/not human. The photographs become documents of objects that sit between scientific tool and horrid simulacrum."

Whitton's images (the machine) are presented alongside interviews with the scientists (the man) on topics such as consideration of religious and humanistic aspects alongside their technological progress. The photographer wonders what it means to be human as technology progresses.

Gruesome Goodies from Conjurer's Kitchen

Conjurer's Kitchen has been featured previously on Neatorama for its culinary artistry in ghoulish cakes and chocolates. This is the perfect time of year to highlight some of their marvelously macabre confections, most of which haven't been seen previously on Neatorama.

This edible art is the work of Annabel de Vetten, who was initially trained as a sculptor and also did fine art painting before she found her true calling in scary sweets. Annabel's experience in the arts is evident in these beautifully embellished and realistic works.

Cinemagraphs by Julien Douvier

A cinemagraph is a photograph in which a selected area is animated to produce a specific movement repeated in a loop. French photographer Julien Douvier takes already vivid photographs and breathes life into them with subtle additions such as the flow of water, smoke or the sway of ivy branches in the wind.

There appears to be a common motif of loneliness and isolation in the images shown here, and the inclusion of movement seems to only highlight the solitude, in that it hints at the simultaneous passage of time.
