Director Richard Kelley's film Donnie Darko was released in 2001. The story of the deliciously eerie puzzle that is Donnie grossed a respectable $7.7 million after the initial budget of $4.5 million. Yet unsurprisingly, elements of the tale continued to capture the imagination of viewers for years to come, guaranteeing the film a definite "cult hit" status. Part of Darko's appeal was its many memorable characters, one of which was the late Patrick Swayze's portrayal of Jim Cunningham. According to Kelley, Swayze relished the part, and dug into fleshing out the character with enthusiasm — and personal touches.

The lovely Deborah Ann Harry was born in 1945 in Miami, Florida and adopted by parents from Hawthorne, New Jersey, who owned a gift shop. After graduating high school and obtaining a two-year Associates of Arts degree, she went to work in Manhattan as a secretary for BBC Radio. Before she went on to conquer the mostly man's world of new wave, Harry worked as a New Jersey go-go dancer, a waitress at the legendary Max's Kansas City, at a disco and as a Playboy Bunny.
Harry's music career got started in the late 1960s, and by the early 1980s she was riding the High Tide and held her audiences in Rapture. This gorgeous video of Antarctica would likely please someone with the sensibilities of a Stanley Kubrick or Wes Anderson in that the pictures of natural spaces are mirrored images meeting in the middle of the shot. The CDC released a review of how well America is doing in terms of eating the daily recommendation of fruits and vegetables. The recommended amount is two cups of fruit and three cups of vegetables per day. Americans ate only one cup of each daily, on average. Of all the states, California ate the most fruits and vegetables, but even their totals weren't all that good. Thirteen percent of California residents ate enough vegetables and seventeen percent ate enough fruit.

One could say that Lexus Australia had a hand on the proverbial pulse of its customer base when it designed this item: a car that pulses light in the rhythm of its driver's heartbeat. The car, called the RC F coupe, is finished with reactive paint that glows when the car is on. The paint then lights in time with sensors attached to the driver that detect his/her pulse. Fans of fine art will appreciate this fascinating and rare footage of French impressionist Claude Monet painting in the gardens at Giverny that he made famous through his works. The film was captured in the summer of 1915, and features the artist painting on a large canvas beside a lily pond. Monet was 74 years old at the time. Via Open Culture
Two brothers on a Destin, Florida beach realized that a 10-foot hammerhead shark was in distress. The shark was pierced by several fishing hooks and had a steel fishing line wrapped around its head. One of the brothers pulled the shark inland so they could stabilize its movement as they rescued it from the entanglements. Excited onlookers alternately helped and screamed during the process. Eventually, the hammerhead made its way back out into deep water and disappeared. Via Daily Dot

Warsaw-based creative studio Ars Thanea set this bouquet of roses aflame for a photoshoot, during which the flowers smoldered, somehow seductively, in the dark. The glow of the burning flora is interesting and beautiful enough that I wish there were more flowers in the series besides roses.
