As we dog enthusiasts know, dogs are lovable and amazing creatures. In fact, one of their physical attributes renders them like superheroes when compared to that of humans. A dog's sense of smell is ten thousand to ten million times greater than a human's, giving them the ability to simply sniff out illnesses of which we live in fear and must rely on machinery and complex medical procedures to detect.

18 Straightforward Facts About Donnie Darko

Image: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Director Richard Kelley's film Donnie Darko was released in 2001. The story of the deliciously eerie puzzle that is Donnie grossed a respectable $7.7 million after the initial budget of $4.5 million. Yet unsurprisingly, elements of the tale continued to capture the imagination of viewers for years to come, guaranteeing the film a definite "cult hit" status. Part of Darko's appeal was its many memorable characters, one of which was the late Patrick Swayze's portrayal of Jim Cunningham. According to Kelley, Swayze relished the part, and dug into fleshing out the character with enthusiasm — and personal touches.

"6. PATRICK SWAYZE WORE HIS REAL CLOTHES FROM THE 1980S.

Jim Cunningham’s Cunning Visions infomercials were even shot at Swayze’s ranch in Calabasas, California. When asked about working with the actor, Richard Kelly confirmed that, "He'’s the nicest guy ... He wanted to take a flame-thrower to his image. He was fearless. We shot the infomercials on his ranch. Those were his real clothes from the '80’s. He frosted his hair specifically for the part. He totally got it and was so cool about it."

Fifteen Flawless Portraits of Debbie Harry

Harry in her New York City Studio, 1980

The lovely Deborah Ann Harry was born in 1945 in Miami, Florida and adopted by parents from Hawthorne, New Jersey, who owned a gift shop. After graduating high school and obtaining a two-year Associates of Arts degree, she went to work in Manhattan as a secretary for BBC Radio. Harry's music career got started in the late 1960s, and by the early 1980s she was riding the High Tide and held her audiences in Rapture. CDC Reviews America's Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables

Image: CDC

The CDC released a review of how well America is doing in terms of eating the daily recommendation of fruits and vegetables. The recommended amount is two cups of fruit and three cups of vegetables per day. Americans ate only one cup of each daily, on average. Of all the states, California ate the most fruits and vegetables, but even their totals weren't all that good. Thirteen percent of California residents ate enough vegetables and seventeen percent ate enough fruit.

Futuristic Lexus Glows to the Beat of the Driver's Heart

YouTube Link

One could say that Lexus Australia had a hand on the proverbial pulse of its customer base when it designed this item: a car that pulses light in the rhythm of its driver's heartbeat. The car, called the RC F coupe, is finished with reactive paint that glows when the car is on. The paint then lights in time with sensors attached to the driver that detect his/her pulse. See the mechanism in action in the footage above. Just don't buy this car and ride with any passenger who is a love interest to whom you're playing hard to get. Then the jig will be up. An early-1950s women's magazine called The Girl Friend (And the Boy Friend) included this quiz, which questioned readers regarding their preferences and lifestyle in order to determine for them once and for all whether they should settle down as a wife or choose to devote time to a career. The more times respondents answered in the negative, the more likely it was that marriage should be their next step.

Check out the rest of the quiz here, especially women readers  I know you wouldn't want to be left in suspense as to how you should proceed with your lives (or in finding out whether you made the right choices).

Two brothers on a Destin, Florida beach realized that a 10-foot hammerhead shark was in distress. The shark was pierced by several fishing hooks and had a steel fishing line wrapped around its head. One of the brothers pulled the shark inland so they could stabilize its movement as they rescued it from the entanglements. Excited onlookers alternately helped and screamed during the process. Eventually, the hammerhead made its way back out into deep water and disappeared. Via Daily Dot

A Burning Bouquet of Roses is Surprisingly Stunning

Warsaw-based creative studio Ars Thanea set this bouquet of roses aflame for a photoshoot, during which the flowers smoldered, somehow seductively, in the dark. The glow of the burning flora is interesting and beautiful enough that I wish there were more flowers in the series besides roses.

See additional shots of the flaming flowers as well as the process behind the photoshoot at Behance.
