Sleep Inside a "Boulder" in the Swiss Alps

Bureau A, a studio in Geneva, Switzerland, created what looks like a boulder on the outside, but is actually a cabin with just enough living space for one. Named "Antoine," the structure, designed to blend in perfectly with the Swiss Alps where it is now placed, is a nod to the Swiss idea of observing the Alps from hidden places within them, according to the design studio. Their site explains,

"The mountains have the power to call for feelings of fascination and fear at the same time. Switzerland has a strong tradition of observing the Alps, living with them, hiding inside them. The awe and the anxiety that this monumental landscape appeals is reflected in the writings of Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz, one of the most important Swiss writers. His novel, Derborence, describes the massive rock fall that covered the pastures of the valley of Lizerne in 1714. Antoine, the main character, survives seven weeks under the rocks before he manages to reach his village, and life.

ANTOINE is a tribute to the alpine experience and to the writer. The small wooden cabin, big enough for the life of one man, is hidden inside a projected concrete rock. Referring to the long lasting Swiss tradition of hidden bunkers, the project integrates the highly urbanised landscape of the Alps. Already described by the French philosopher Paul Virilio in 1975, military architecture conducted by principles of camouflage has, for long, fascinated the architects."

The cabin contains a fireplace, bed, table, stool and window. According to Bureau A, any inhabitant of the cabin accepts the risk of the shelter being situated in an area where it's succeptible to rock falls. Not only is it fit for a Thoreau, but a daredevil Thoreau!

Read more about the cabin and see pictures of the inside at the Bureau A website.

Twelve Movies for the Next Twelve Months

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while a highly anticipated film release in 2015, won't be the only title that will have fans flocking to theaters this year. There is Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, due to be released by the end of the year. Mad Max: Fury Road comes out in May. A new James Bond film, Spectre, will be out in November, to mention just a few films of interest.

This article at Huff Post Entertainment names a major film release for each month in 2015, as well as listing other titles of note for that month, along with their corresponding release dates. It makes for a nice schedule for fans who desire to mark their 2015 calendars with movie outings.

Brody the French Bulldog Puppy is Tricked Out

YouTube Link

Brody Brixton the tiny, twelve-week-old French bulldog wants to show you a trick or two. More like a trick or six, tricks which he learned in only four days! Brody's trick repertoire is a lot richer than that of my two-year-old "puppy" Jasper. He was watching my laptop screen as Brody showed him up in the trick department, and I do believe he was jealous. Or maybe just resentful of his lack of a good teacher! Oops. -Via Tastefully Offensive

Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Batcake!

Mike’s Amazing Cakes
made this cakealicious scaled model of the Batcave, just as it looked in the 1966 Batman television series. This Batcake comes complete with the Batcomputer, an atomic reactor, the handy instant costume change lever and secret entrance, and the Batmobile. There's even little Batman and Robin figures inside the Batmobile, though the car and figures are not edible. The Batmobile is a diecast model which was supplied by the client, and around which the cake was designed. Bat Appetit to Mike's client!

Seventeen Cool Signatures of Famous People

Business Insider collected seventeen signatures of famous people that are unique and thus easily recognizable. They call these the "coolest" throughout history; while I think that's an overstatement and there are plenty more celebrities with cool autographs, their grouping is interesting nevertheless. And a collection of famous signatures wouldn't be complete without the man whose name has become synonymous with the concept.

See all seventeen signatures in this collection here.

Little Girl Attempts to Teach Newfoundland How to Hula Hoop

There are no more tolerant and loving dogs than those who are the companions of children. These faithful canines put up with whatever the child's whim of the day may be. In this case, a sweet little girl named Sierra attempts to teach her Newfoundland how to hula hoop. He likely knows right away that isn't a move in his repertoire, but that doesn't stop him from patiently watching and listening. -Via Tastefully Offensive

Ancient Trees: A Photo Series

These fantastic captures are those of San Francisco-based photographer Beth Moon. For 14 years, Moon has done research to locate the world's oldest trees and traveled to photograph them. Some specimens are more than 1,000 years old. Moon said of the project,

"Many of the trees I have photographed have survived because they are out of reach of civilization; on mountainsides, private estates, or on protected land. Certain species exist only in a few isolated areas of the world. For example; there are 6 species of spectacular baobabs, found only on the island of Madagascar. Sadly, the baobab is now one of the three most endangered species on the island.

The criteria I use for choosing particular trees are basically three: age, immense size or notable history. I research the locations by a number of methods; history books, botanical books, tree registers, newspaper articles and information from friends and travelers.

Standing as the earth’s largest and oldest living monuments, I believe these symbolic trees will take on a greater significance, especially at a time when our focus is directed at finding better ways to live with the environment, celebrating the wonders of nature that have survived throughout the centuries. By feeling a larger sense of time, developing a relationship with the natural world, we carry that awareness with us as it becomes a part of who we are. I cannot imagine a better way to commemorate the lives of the world’s most dramatic trees, many which are in danger of destruction, than by exhibiting their portraits."

A book of this series, entitled Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time can be purchased at Abbeville Press. Visit Beth Moon's website to see more of her work. See more images from this series here.
