Red Panda Cub Settles in at Nashville Zoo

Nashville Zoo welcomed a female red panda cub in early July. Red panda births are highly anticipated, as the species is vulnerable to extinction, their reproduction rate is slow and there is a high infant mortality rate. Karen Rice, a supervisor at the zoo explains,

“Red Panda mothers are very prone to stress and easily agitated, which could cause them to reject or unintentionally harm the cubs. Because of the high infant mortality rate, we took every precaution possible to ensure the baby was delivered and cared for safely.

We anticipated a late June/early July birth so we denned up our female in May. She was confined in the building that she is used to and provided with a choice of nest boxes and most importantly – air conditioning!”

Cameras were installed in the nest boxes, which allowed zoo staff to carefully monitor the birth and nursing without disturbing the mother and cub. Rice continued,

“After our female gave birth, we made the decision to continue our hands-off approach since all was going so well. At one month of age, we did our first neonate exam and determined the cub to be female, in good health and weighing just under two pounds. The cub and mom both did well and were happily reunited right after.”

Sounds like things are going very well for this little cub and her mom. If only the poor thing was even a little bit cute, though.

New York Public Library Menu Collection,1850-Present

Delmonico's Restaurant, 1899

The New York Public Library (NYPL) has a fantastic collection of menus online, ranging in years from 1850 to present day. It's one of those online databases that is easy to get caught up in, only to look up and find that it's over an hour later, and you've gone down a digitized menus from the 1800s rabbit hole. (At least that's what happened to... a friend of mine. Yeah, that's it.)

A woman named Frank E. Buttolph was integral to the archive. She started collecting menus in 1900, which she explained in a letter to the trustees of the NYPL. Buttolph, a visionary who intended for the collection to be for research, was considered an eccentric with a strange obsession. Read more about Buttoph here.

These images are menus ranging from 1899 to 1959. Many of the menus, some of which had elaborate covers with artworks printed in color, tell the reader much more about the past than what foods were commonly consumed in restaurants. Cocktails and beverages were remarkably different. Cigarettes and cigars were often listed. The cover of the menu for the famous Cotton Club had imagery that today would be found patently offensive and racist. The menus truly are time capsules.

Deer Run Across Golden Gate Bridge, Cause Massive Traffic Jam

YouTube Link

On the evening of August fifth, a pair of deer found their way onto the Golden Gate Bridge and proceeded to run across. Their adventure, which started just as rush hour began, caused a huge traffic jam. The highway patrol was called at around 5:30 p.m. Before the highway patrol could reach the scene, they were called off, as the deer exited the bridge around 6:00 p.m., heading north toward Marin. The animals' detour was certainly understandable. We all need a change of scenery sometimes. Via 22 Words

The Science of Spontaneous Human Combustion

Spontaneous human combustion: for decades the topic has been a source of debate. Some painted it as a mysterious phenomenon that happened with no external source of ignition. Others said it did not technically exist, as cases historically purported to be spontaneous human combustion were caused by nearby sources of flame or other elements.

There is now a definitive answer, and it makes perfect sense. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Tubeytooons. Via Geeks are Sexy

Daredevils Hike into Volcano

YouTube Link

In a video that is just as cool as it is Chock Fulla Crazy, Sam Cossman and George Kourounis, accompanied by guides Geoff Mackley and Brad Ambrose get unbelievably close to a the roiling lava of an active volcano, Marum Crater. The volcano is located on Ambrym island, which is part of the archipelago of Vanuatu. These adventurers may be a bit nutty, but they definitely captured some awesome video footage (which would be even better sans apocalyptic, over-the-top music... but that's what I think about practically every video.) Puppy Keeps Cheetah Cub Company During Surgery

YouTube Link

Two months ago, Miss Cellania posted about the pairing of Raina the Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy and Ruuxa the cheetah cub at the San Diego Zoo. The pup was matched with the cub to help socialize him in the absence of his mother, who rejected him after he was born.

Ever since the two met, they've been constant companions. Recently, Ruuxa was diagnosed with a growth abnormality in his front legs that necessitated surgery to prevent future complications with his mobility. This video shows Raina quietly waiting in the operating room as a comfort to Ruuxa and, later, sitting next to his crate as he recovers from the sedation. Via Nothing to Do With Arbroath.

True Grit

For years, actor Jeff Bridges has been photographing the film sets on which he works. The artistic actor, who aside from taking pictures also paints, uses a Widelux camera in order to capture these excellent panoramic shots. A book of his photos was released in 2006. Bridges says of his photography, "I think I have a perspective that not many people have. And I get to take advantage of all the strange sources of light on set."
