I'm not comfortable with the premise, "In particular, people who still shop for themselves or take care of their own household chores are less likely to be perceived as old, new research shows. [...]". If we followed this premise strictly then rich people in their 20s who hire people to shop for them, drive them and clean house for them etc. would be classified as old.
