I Am Bitterly, Bitterly Disappointed

Nick Crews (pictured left, Photo: SWNS) has become a cult hero and a viral sensation- particularly in Great Britain. Why? Because of a leaked email he sent to his kids explaining just how (brutally) disappointed he is with them. It starts with "Dear All Three" and goes pretty downhill from there.

With last evening's crop of whinges and tidings of more rotten news for which you seem to treat your mother like a cess-pit, I feel it is time to come off my perch.

It is obvious that none of you has the faintest notion of the bitter disappointment each of you has in your own way dished out to us. We are seeing the miserable death throes of the fourth of your collective marriages at the same time we see the advent of a fifth.

We are constantly regaled with chapter and verse of the happy, successful lives of the families of our friends and relatives and being asked of news of our own children and grandchildren. I wonder if you realize how we feel — we have nothing to say which reflects any credit on you or us…

I can now tell you that I for one, and I sense Mum feels the same, have had enough of being forced to live through the never-ending bad dream of our children's underachievement and domestic ineptitudes...

...I am bitterly, bitterly disappointed.

Dad

Ouch. You can read the rest here. While Crews may be taking shots at his own kids, people are celebrating him as someone with the guts to stand up to his own overprivileged slackers, something that "just happens to be a burning subtext to Europe's monumental blahs."

Are you with or against Crews? While I think it is tough to say one way or the other without good context of the children, I do feel like I know a few too many people my own age with a false sense of entitlement.

New Christmas Cocktail

I love pretty much every Holiday based on the food that it's associated with. Christmas? I love my Eggnog Sherry cake. Oh man oh man. You aren't living if you haven't had it. Well, okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but whatever. Beyond the cake though, I have never been that big a fan of Eggnog; I just don't get it, it's milky and thick and gross. The problem then arises that I don't have a go-to Christmas drink. Looks like this year I may be starting a new tradition, thanks Cozy Walls.

This year I put together a more tart beverage with pink grapefruit and lime, more for tree-rocking and sushi eating than lazy lights gazing. Adjust the amounts based on your taste. Begin with pink grapefruit juice, add gin if you wish, then drop in sweet scoops of lime sherbet (I used my melon baller for the little glasses). Top off the drink with club soda or another fizzy liquid and watch the bright green bubbles grow to the top of your glass.

Crossing The Atlantic

Photo: Robin Lovelock

Maybe it's because I just saw the movie The Life of Pi, or maybe it's because I sailed as a kid- but I think this needs to be a bigger story. Today, November 27th (the day of my birth, but keep that on the down-low as no one at the office is aware of it) a miniature boat was launched in hopes of being the first unmanned craft to (intentionally) cross the Atlantic. Robin Lovelock is a retired NATO scientist and the creator of this project. He believes the vessel will have to navigate 6,000 miles via GPS to make it from the coastal village Barton on Sea, England.

Lovelock has, an albeit eclectic, but great website. You can watch videos, get updates, and even follow an up-to-date GPS map of the boat.

For my business partners who visit these pages... OK - I confess! I DO spend much of my time on this hobby project :-)

I guess maybe because I am a hobbyist at heart, and I love seeing other's passions - but I think this is great. Keep it up Mr. Lovelock!

Let's Put Our Heads Together

Photo: Stephen Shaheen

Titled Let's Put Our Heads Together, this sculpture was created by the creative Stephen Shaheen. While not necessarily practical for home living, his work is captivating to me. Maybe it's the use of the Edison Bulbs, another impractical yet mesmerizing item, but I want one. It's something that I feel I think I could do on my own, but then when I turn around and try it - the project turns out horribly wrong. Like so wrong.

Cardboard Star Destroyer

Some dads just get it. They build awesome things, like big Star Wars Cardboard Star Destroyers, with their kids for endless hours of enjoyment. Bruce is such a dad. Here is what he had to say on building this project.

Now, the major benefit of using cardboard is that my little guy can lift up such a massive ship and play with it. Also, I used material that was all destined to be recycled or thrown out, and with the exception of white spray paint and styro-foam craft balls, I had everything on hand to make it. So, the basic structure is heavy corrugated cardboard, lighter cardboard for the detailing on the conning tower and 'sandwich filler' greeblies, a packing tube for the engine nozzles (sawed into three pieces), cereal box cardboard for lighter details, duct duct tape, masking tape, and a lot of carpenter glue. All told, it took about three days (including one very late night to do the detailing), and I now have templates worked out for the overall structure. It has an internal support structure (one center piece running down the middle with 'ribs' about every 5"), and the overall length is shy of three feet. As far as making ships of this scale, it was a relatively quick build-up and a great weekend project.

Result? One happy kid.

Kitten Found In Lincoln Statue

Kittens love Abraham Lincoln - that is a known fact. So it's no wonder this three-week-old kitten ended up inside a statue of Lincoln at the President's Hall of Fame in Clermont, Florida. What is surprising is that the kitten was trapped there for three days, according to Daniel Davis of the Humane Society.

Eventually the fire department was able to rescue the little kitten by drilling a hole in the statue. The curator of the museum and maker of the statue, John Zweifel, will adopt the kitten. He has decided to call him Abe.

A Canadian Thanksgiving

And the winner of the sassiest remark about Thanksgiving is... this Canadian anchor guy. He seems grouchy because there is still no hockey. While he may not celebrate Thanksgiving, he certainly is celebrating Movember.

Understanding Twilight

I get it now, I understand Twilight. It's a classic high school love story really, at its core. Girl feels misunderstood, strange boy understands her - they live misunderstood together. Well maybe it isn't all that simple but you get the gist.

Conceptual Clouds

Photographer Sarah Ann Wright wants to shoot "fun and dreams" with her photography. Well the scene above would certainly fall into that collection. Wright is a London-based photographer who is great at messing with reality, creating her own conceptual images. She has put together this two piece collection of imaginary clouds. You can read her entire Bio here.

Game of Thrones as a Seinfeld Sitcom

-Youtube Link-

Combining two of my favorite TV shows ever, Seinfield and Game of Thrones, would seem like a good idea. Well, no actually, it wouldn't. As much as I like Seinfield, I sort of hate the brand of Sitcom television it created. That being said I loved the video, they nailed it with the laugh track and everything. It's funny how different these scenes feel just because of the addition of the laugh track.

A Modern Crusoe

Photo: Brian Cassey

David Glasheen, of Restoration Island off of Brisbane, has been likened to Robinson Crusoe and Tom Hanks' character from Cast Away - Chuck Noland. Why? Because David Glasheen lives on a desolate island 1,500 miles from civilization.

Glasheen was once a businessman in Australia. In the stock market crash of 1987 he lost everything, millions of dollars and eventually his marriage. Then he upended himself and left his corporate life in Sydney for the island life. Photographer Brian Cassey joined Glasheen on the island and produced an article for The Sydney Morning Herald titled The Last Days of Eden.

David grows his own vegetables, catches his own fish, brews his own beer, and keeps himself -along with his dog Quasi- entertained. Check out more photos and info here.

The Nap Took Me

No - I did not take a nap - The nap - took - me. Oh Shel, how you get me. Is it too late to trade my Ikea Hopen bed for this beauty? Seriously that has got to be the comfiest of beds I have ever seen. Okay, it may only sleep one and I have a tenancy to roll in my sleep but whatever. I still dig it.
