I really enjoy the broken plates for the Greek restaurant... in ancient Greece the way they decided who sat on the lesser council (which changed names all the time over the years) was by annually breaking plates and writing their names on them. The names picked out would serve on their equivalent of the House of Representatives for that year. No voting, just plate-breakin'. I believe Rome adopted this practice for awhile as well, but I could be mistaken.
