To laugh and laugh at the death of somebody who contributed so much to environmental causes is sad. He may have put his life in danger - but doing so created an audience for him to put out his message. You laugh because he died by a blow from an animal - though reality is, he died doing something he loved. It's sad that most of the world will die from sitting on the couch watching TV doing nothing - and those who do something and die because of it get scrutinized by those lazy, apathetic people.
