I've seen double sided ones in the Rare Book Room at the University of Illinois. If you slide the pages one way you get one picture and if you slide them the other way you get a completely different picture.
So sorry to hear of your loss. People who don't have animals sometimes don't realize the extent to which people really love them and think of them as part of the family, how deservedly they are loved, and how much love they give in return.
One of my blog readers has also identified it as a rattail or grenadier. There's an article on it in Wikipedia and the picture looks like the same fish.
