1. The definition of animal abuse. According to some, anyone who owns a pet - no matter how good you are to that pet, should be hauled in front of a firing squad. It's only a matter of time before some nitwit slips in a definition that doesn't belong there. Actually, this would probably happen from day one.
2. The second problem is NeatORama's continual pushing of articles that have absolutely nothing to do with what this site is/was about. It's their site and they can ruin it as much as they want, but they ARE turning it from "NeatORama" to "Controversial Issues O Rama". May I suggest starting another site instead? I come here to get away from all that crap.
A quick note: The Humane Society of the United States is not affiliated with the American Humane Association nor your local humane society. They are a radical animal rights group akin to PETA and are not above fabricating a story. They globbed onto the "Humane Society" name to make themselves seem more mainstream. Take ANYTHING they say with a 10-pound salt-lick.
That said, I have a pretty low tolerance for animal cruelty and there's room for a world of improvement in every corner of the United States, not to mention the rest of the world. Whether this is a propaganda piece or not is irrelevant. You can still do YOUR part to not participate in animal cruelty. Buy local, buy cage-free, buy grass-fed, etc.
I heartily endorse the vegetarian lifestyle. I've been a vegetarian for years now. Well, I'm not a strict vegetarian as I do still eat beef and chicken. And bacon! Mmmmmm, bacon.... And eggs. But not fish, because fish is disgusting. I refuse to eat something the smells like a back alley dumpster.
Anyhoo....
It is certainly possible to get humanely treated meat, no matter what the vegan lobby would have you believe. And the best thing about it is that humanely treated meat tastes sooooooooo much better than the factory farmed concentration camp food. Grass-fed beef and free range chicken are fed ground-up unicorn horns (which totally grow back once per year so it's not like you're killing the unicorn). Really, try a grass-fed steak and you'll never go back to that stuff that grows in the meat counter of your supermarket again.
While they look well made, their selling point is that "it's totally concealed from the thief. If they don't know where it is, they can't break into it." While criminals aren't usually the smartest group on the planet, I'd expect most of them to check under the mattress.
A better selling point might be that it doesn't stand out like a regular safe. Let's say a repairman or someone else drops by and notices your standard safe. He then makes a mental note to drop by your house when the zombies are unleashed. This safe might prevent that.
Having read this article, the linked article, and viewed the video, I'm still unclear about this. I originally thought it was about "How to Peel a Potato" but it's apparently about "How to Peel a Boiled Potato". There's a difference.
Although it's still a neat trick, this seems mostly useless and would end up being more work (for me at least).
Let's say you were making mashed potatoes. After boiling the potatoes, you then have to WAIT for the water to cool by 100 degrees. How long does that take? You then have to get a bunch of ice (which doesn't exist at in my freezer), wait for it to cool down, dump the potatoes (one by one) into the ice bath, peel them, then put them back in the pot. By this time they're cooled down, more difficult to mash, won't easily melt the butter I put in, etc....
And thanks to SD Tom for reading the original article and posting the facts. I suspected as much, but am inherently lazy and if someone else is willing to do the work....
By the way, I used to read BoingBoing a lot (a site NeatORama frequently refers from) but stopped after their continued over the top political articles that, of course, only gave one side of the story. If I want an article like the above, I'll go back there. If I want an article that gives the other side of the story, I'll go elsewhere. If I want articles that talk about neat stuff, where can I go?
Just because the "water gun" is shaped into the form of a gun doesn't make this irony.
And I agree with the others above. Stick to your name's sake of "neat" or be prepared to lose a large chunk of your audience (including me). I can read about this on a lot of other sites on the Internet. I don't need to read it here as well.

Some of their other videos seem more useful.
