Well, caffeine isn't quite the same thing as fuel. It contains no potential for energy. People just think it does. (Pretty much the first thing mentioned in the Caffeine Facts posting.)
Yeah, I don't think the Shakers belong on there. They may have dwindled in number and only survived for, oh, 200 years, but not because of any particular failure that would qualify as "bombed miserably". And they left behind some nice furniture.
John Dubya - actually, Californians are probably more aware of the New Madrid quake and fault zone than those who live in the area ... it's taught in high schools here as part of the basic science curriculum (and as a transplant to CA, I learned about it in basic geology in college).
I've lived in red zones for twenty years now ... moved here from a blue zone.
The other folks who I don't think are fully aware of the hazard are those along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. (Seattle, I'm talking to you.)
Disgusting is just a matter of perspective. Nothing on that list was really "disgusting" or taboo even. It's not like any of it was unclean or dangerous.
I know a lot of Europeans think that American flavors like Root Beer and our constant use of peanuts are disgusting.
When I lived in Pittsburgh I went to meet a friend for lunch who worked at WQED. She gave me a brief tour and we ran into Fred Rogers. She introduced me. He was very sweet and I told him that when I was a kid I thought that the trolley went to the town of "Maple Leaf" (not Make-Believe) ... I thought it was in Canada because they had a monarchy (all I knew was that they had kings & queens on their money and we had presidents) and we were a democracy.
That's pretty funny that they neglect to mention that the new owners took out all the stuff about dinosaur evolution and natural history and have turned it into a propaganda piece for intelligent design.

I figured it sounded like a cross between a babbling brook and having your house jacked up. Turns it out it's pretty much the former.
