The comment about why the Chinese refused to have their hair cut is erroneous. Religion in China was relatively freeform with the worship of things such as "the god of doorways" readily acceptable. Confucianism was a social belief. The Confucian belief was that if your hair was cut or you lost a limb, etc. it was an offense that dishonored your parents because you were wasting the natural gifts they had given you at birth and in life.
