My grand father was a mechanic in the 50th Aero Observation Squadron. The pilot and observer that found them and later attempted relief drop were shot down were from the 50th. The pilot received the medal of honor and the observer a silver star. He didn't talk much about his WWI experience, but when he did i could tell he was very proud.
