Every time I hear about a way to watch tv shows over the internet I get horribly excited, go to the site, and am disappointed to find they won't play in the UK. Does anyone know of any site, with any shows, that I can watch over here in Scotland?
I have to wonder how much of the response is influenced by nationalism. I think if it had been a Russian man stabbing a Russian air traffic controller, tried in Russian courts, the response would be less in his favor. I cann't read the article, and it's foolish to make assumptions with this little information, but the tone of the extract suggests that some sort of narrative has been created out of the incident.
I like the quotes, but the most peculiar thing is the list itself. Some are clever jokes, some are silly mistakes, some are comically ironic (presumably unintentionaly), and some seem like they would makes sense in context. The one about the streets of Philadelphia could be someone saying something unintentonally funny, or it could be a sarcastic reply. Many quotes sound absurd when taken out of context.
A tangentially related story: There's a park with a Japanese garden near where I used to live. One time I went to see the koi being fed (it's really cool. An old man rings a bell and they all swim up to him.) The old man who feeds them cornered me and began to tell this long story about breeding the fish. It was the kind of story where you're not really sure what he's talking about so you just nod and wonder how you can politely get away. Then he went on a long rant about how he's sure that Vietnamese people come in the night and steal his fish to eat them. I realize that it's not actually a very interesting story now that I write it down.
It has all the logic, both good and bad, of not allowing poor or unskilled/uneducated people in, with the arguement that they would likely be a drain on public resources. I know that when I applied for a student visa to the UK, part of the info they wanted was bank statements and proof that I wouldn't have to ask for support(although I do get health care).
The law makes perfect sense to me, this is just a case of an extreme, unexpected situation. I mean, if something cannot be legally sold in the state, should law enforcement officers be able to sell it? It's simply making sure there is no confusion: it's illegal to sell something that it is illegal to sell. Also, there should definately be restrictions on what seized property should be sold, to prevent abuses.
JDandICE-what are you babbling about? Is the idea that this particular brand is so awesome it has magical properties that exempt it from laws? Is the problem that liquor that was being sold by someone without a liscence was seized? I'm afraid I don't see what point you're trying to make.
As a recent high school graduate, the strangest thing about this book, judging from your selections, is how attractive and/or interesting all these teens are. The vast majority of teens that I know aren't, or at least not so strikingly.
I think that its rather revealing of how some military leaders think. As in, what is the scariest, most horrible thing that could happen, ever? Gay people. Duh. It's pathetic that people in power, and with the authority to actually cause research to start, are that...I can't even think of an appropriate word.
There was an interesting article about bonobos (and how they are studied) in the New Yorker a while back. What little study of bonobos there had been suggested that are much more peaceful and have much more sex than chimps, and, if I remember correctly, had a matriarchal society. This being an idea that's extremely attractive to some people, those aspects of their behavior tend to be all any one discusses. Which means that they tend to be exagerated as any actual observations filter through what people want to see and what makes the most interesting story. Which is why people tend to discuss bonobos as the opposites of chimps - violent chimps, peaceful bonobos is an easily understandable story. Which is exacerbated by the fact that the work on bonobos that is most read and quoted is by Frans de Waal, who has never seen a wild bonobo, only those in captivity. The behavior of animals in a situation in which there is a constant food supply, no threat from predators, and nothing to do - not to mention in smaller groups than they are found in the wild - is different from behavior in the wild. It's an interesting artice, and can be found online.
I rather like them. However my first thought was about how creepy they would be at night. I imagine some one driving along, when suddenly, out of the mist, looms a giant figure with a glowing head and a foot raised to crush you.
