For splinters, I prefer our stereo microscope and a new scalpel blade. Had a shred of brass embedded in my finger the other day - through the microscope it looked like a dagger and was easy to get out - but without, it had defied me for some time.

I find their stuff is very variable. We've had some stuff for over twenty years...and other stuff doesn't last long at all. And it's not just the expensive stuff that lasts, or the cheap stuff that fails.

Some years ago someone used a B+Q (British DIY shop) 10% off discount card all over the US. He waved it at all sorts of people when paying and it almost always got accepted. Once, someone challenged it, and asked what B+Q stood for. "Bush and Quayle" he replied. "Oh. That's OK." and got the 10% off.

Now that's just silly. I don't think anyone woujld actually claim that. Rape is wrong, and the rapist is to blame...that much is obvious. What's also obvious to me is that if people choose to try to protect themselves from a threat, they should be encouraged, not disuaded.
I don't disuade people from wearing reflective clothing on bicycles, despite it often being the driver's failure to look properly that causes an accident.

Certainly - I don't lock my front door because I know burglary is bad and not my fault and that we should be tackling theives, not locking our doors. (insert smiley of choice here, for anyone irony-challenged).

And that awful, awful theme song. Grates every time I hear it...though at least it's offset by the badly put up poster I saw which described the tune as "My Heart Will Goon"...which memory helps pass the time when I can't avoid hearing it.

Many years ago I needed to bleed a radiator in a elderly relative's house. I couldn't find a radiator key...and Mujm asked what one looked like.
I described one, and she said "Oh, there's one in my handbag."
I asked her why...and she said that it'd been there for years - moving from bag to bag. She didn't know why... it just sort of lived there.

I thought it was from their habit of milking maple trees. Originally done by hand, they discovered that the finest syrup came only from particularly viscious trees (the better the syrup the more viscious it is) so for safety's sake they learned to milk the trees from out of reach of its limbs.
