My favorite lab story involves a demonstration of pH and the difference between using litmus paper as a qualitative measure and using an electronic pH meter. My dimwitted professor decided to use concentrated nitric acid for the one of the test solutions. The student in front of me dipped the litmus paper into the acid and proceeds to shake the paper like someone would shake down a thermometer. As I was laughing to myself why someone would shake litmus paper, I started to feel an itching sensation on my arms and legs. The nitwit had managed to spray acid all over me. I ended up embarrassed under the safety shower with Swiss cheese holes all over my pants and shirt. I still have scars on my arm!
