Daniel Kim 5's Comments

I hesitate to comment this thread, since it quickly heated up. Still, Miranda Vink's comment that:

"Muslim women are indoctrinated by their religion and orthodox environment to feel ashamed of their sex and their body."

raised some thoughts for me. Our U.S. and western culture promotes an environment where women can wear a wide range of clothing, from highly covering to very skimpy. Still, can we honestly say that U.S. women are not still ashamed of their bodies? Body image and anxiety is a major concern for women, and images of professionally beautiful women, now enhanced by computer manipulation, is seen as the norm.

I do not condone or agree with the theory that incidental viewing of a woman's body drives helpless men into sin, and therefore women should be hidden at all times, but our own culture doesn't actually promote healthy self-acceptance either.

Dagwood and Blondie are the oldest of the featured strips here. Dagwood's devotion to Blondie (who actually used to say "boop-boop-a-do") was so great that he went on a hunger strike until his father consented to let them get married. Even then, he was disinherited!

The experience clearly left its mark on him, since he has a strong food obsession to this day.

It's interesting to see how different people modify the same environment space. Some of the rooms are very cluttered, while others are comfortably organized. Still others are severely sparse.

Almost all rooms have been modified in some way to make them more functional. Shelves are mounted on the walls, or wires are stretched across to create laundry lines. Electrical outlets are multiplied, and appliances are added.

When I look at these different rooms, I wonder what can be done to make them inherently more functional. For instance, can sturdy anchors be integrated into the walls during construction, allowing residents to mount shelves, television sets or other enhancements without damage to the structure? Can the air vents be designed to accomodate covers, eliminating the need for adhesive tape? Can electrical services be designed that let residents plug in many appliances, but only actually supply power to those appliances that are in use at the time, thus preventing overloaded circuits while maintaining convenience?

As cities are populated at higher densities, especially in high population/low rent districts, such considerations may help create more humane residences.

People who prepare samples for electron microscopes will use glass "knives" to cut ultra-thin tissue samples. The clean cut edge of broken glass lets them make a very thin, smooth slice of their sample.

When our daughter was a baby, we took her to the zoo. Whe had bottles of breast milk in a small cooler that was then attached to her stroller.

After an afternoon of walking around the zoo, her bottled milk had formed clumps of . . . butter!

I wonder if sonoluminescence as been detected in the cavitation bubble from the pistol shrimp? Also, this type of bubble collapse can occur on ship propellers, and are able to seriously degrade the material structure of the propellor. How does the shrimp prevent its claws from becoming pitted and degraded by this?

Finally, is nuclear cold-fusion also happening here? Maybe the gamma ray burst is another part of the shrimp's arsenal.

As a former student of molecular biology, I've always wanted a pair of vanity plates with the inscriptions:

Eco RI GAATTC

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

I guess you had to have been there.
