These guys have no idea what they're talking about. They're... (how do I put this delicately?)...

Naive to the point of stupidity.

It's frustrating to me, because the attention paid to undeserving fools like these guys dilutes the attention paid to the real space program, and the fascinating work that real engineers and real scientists are actually doing.

"Sorry but nobody can suggest that you shouldn't build dual tower blocks because of what happened to WTC."

I'm not saying there should be a law against it; I'm just relating that at least one other architect has pointed out that many people will see the WTC in any twin tower block design, and don't be surprised if a subset of that group has a strong reaction. I believe MVRDV when they say they never saw the resemblance, I'm just surprised they didn't.

As to your point about TV show titles, there's a difference between sanitizing the past and changing how you proceed in the future.

(Also, just so it's clear, the Museum Plaza project in KY was canceled for economic reasons, not because of objection to the design.)

Keep in mind that the 9-11 resemblance is due partly to the vantage point and technique of this rendering, and therefore would not be as obvious from earlier design sketches or models. MVRDV often work with colored foam when building models, which would suppress the tendency to see the WTC in the work.

On the other hand, several years ago, architect Joshua Prince-Ramus noted the potential for an 'image problem' in two tower building designs, in reference to his then under development (and since canceled) Museum Plaza project in Lexington, KY. So you would think that someone at MVRDV would have seen this coming.

High Test Peroxide is as dangerous to handle as Nitrous Oxide, probably more so, actually.

It has been evaluated as an oxidizer for rocket engines before in the past; a poor safety record is one of the reasons HTP is not used as rocket propellant today.

HTP in torpedoes have been implicated in the loss of more than one submarine.

Consumer reports (responding to a related Tierney piece which quotes Kazman in the NY Times) explains:

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/home/2011/03/consumer-reports-to-the-new-york-times-washers-are-greener-and-better-.html

takeaway: "Consumer Reports has seen product performance improve or remain at high levels, while energy efficiency standards have become increasingly stringent over the years. Washing machine performance has actually improved while dishwashers and refrigerators performance has remained at high levels."

You can see the charge get kicked sideways before the first stage ignites.

The real improvement would be floor level signage or lighting. In a fire ceiling mounted signs are often obscured by smoke.

The big lighted exit signs are visible from further away than the small "international" style placards.
