In Australia we have a famous very old country song called "the dog sat on the tuckerbox", based on a poem about the true event. (a tuckerbox is a food carton used by pioneer travellers and soldeirs etc). Its a bit of iconography up there with Waltzing Matilda. Theres even a statue of him at the place it was supposed to have taken place.
I never really understood what the fuss was about a dog sitting ona big old food carton and why the poem and song was so angry and bitter, til i dug up original version.
It wasnt ON it.. it was IN it.. and he didnt SIT or SAT, seems in name of decency an aspirant was lost. "The Dog S-at In the tuckerbox" now i understood why my grandad would laugh himself silly.
