I've got a couple of text books here that say it is not considered to be authentic. And no scholar worth reading would state that the world is ending in 2012.

Re Rumpus: Thank you so much!! I'm a grad student in archaeology as well and this was a bit irritating to me. Cahokia isn't that big of a mystery any more, you're totally right there are several other places that are less well known.

The Dresden Codex is not a good example of Maya work, its origin and authenticity are debated by many scholars.

Let's not forget the Maya calendar was cyclical and would end (and subsequently restart).
