its a storm/lightning alarm. one of the terminals on the side is connected via a wire to a lightning conductor. the other terminal is connected to the earth. if lightning strikes, the central pendulum swings rapidly back and forth between the two terminals hitting them and ringing the bell at the very top.
fair point, although i must say it is rather arrogant to say that american ideas, technology and economic status are so superior. im sure japan would be close competition in that field. sounds like a rather biased article.
its clearly a steampunk perpetual motion machine. sometimes known as a spritzjig, it is supposedly the worlds most useless device. pouring boiling weater into the top "kettle" starts off the process. the escaping steam collects on a parabolic mirror(not shown in the picture) and drips through the two beakers into a third(also not shown) which in turn heats water in the kettle. its a pretty clever little machine. except that it doesnt work.
ive always had a fascination with eggs. how about a weekly competition were people send in pics of eggs theyve made to look like celebrities/movie characters :)
its a failed champagne bottle opener design. you slide the open end under the cork and yank down on the other end. it makes it easier to open and keeps you a safe distance away from supersonic corks! :P
