I think you guys are missing the point. No it's not any different than college 30, 40, 50 years ago-- that's the problem!!
I am a high school teacher working in an inner city school and am feeling really frustrated with teaching. I would love to make changes in the way I teach but without funding or support it's like hitting your head against a wall. The result at my school is student apathy. We need to radically change the way we teach because the world around us is changing at an incredibly fast pace but the way we educate people is not.
I'm not sure what the answer is but I can say that that the teaching profession is losing a lot of fantastic teachers because it is so difficult to implement positive change. I saw 12 (some of the most effective, hard working and creative people I have ever met) of the 60 teachers at my school leave last June to pursue law degrees, medicine or opportunities in the private sector. I think I am going to be next.
I think the CBC radio show Quirks and Quarks addressed this years ago and said that it's only true outside (as opposed to in a freezer). So if you try the experiment at home with ice cube tray the hot water will not freeze faster.
I can see painful menstruation making a woman sick like that, although she's rather chipper for having painful cramps. The thing I don't get is that she just stood there, surely she was feeling a little queasy before hand?
I find when ever people do something good for themselves and/or the environment that is not the 'norm', they get attacked. Is it because they are making us look bad? Because the only reason we are not doing it is that we are lazy or refuse to give up our greedy, gluttonous lifestyles? So we have to react by critisizing every last detail?
Give these people credit! They made a huge lifestyle change and are sticking to it and happy! Most of us are not able to commit to that kind of change no matter how easy it may be.
