Selene was the Greek goddess of lunar worship, noted for bearing a torch to illuminate the darkness. She is a symbol for knowledge in the sense that she reveals that which can not be seen by normal human eyes. It is for this reason the Illuminati have adopted the torch as their symbol. Also the Statue of Liberty is based off of Selene. Some speculate the Greeks derived their goddess Selene from the Egyptian goddess Isis, mother of Horus, who is historically depicted bearing a lantern.
