I think this goes way overboard. Our son goes to a free democratic school with no classes and no tests. However, there are rules. Lots of rules. The school is run by the students and staff equally and they take it very seriously.

Schools as they were structured for the industrial revolution are not necessary and they are no longer even relevant to the modern world. Education does not have to come from a mold. We learn more quickly and easily when we have interest and motivation.

Of course, our society has rules. You have to be quiet in the library, you have to pull over when the nice officer tells you to, you have to pay for that bag of chips. Most people who don't learn to follow the rules end up getting an in depth education in the criminal justice system. Whether it interests them or not.

This is why my kids will no longer be attending public schools. They will not be bored, they will be challenged and respected, they will be held responsible for their own successes and failures and they will not be led away in handcuffs by armed police officers unless they commit a serious and/or violent offense.

The girl was wrong. The school was more wrong. And the police were almost as wrong as they could be in this situation unless she was verbally or physically abusive towards them.

They should be required to pay for her to attend the school of her choice until she graduates. She will most likely receive a better education and the whole of society will benefit.

To say that a punishment works is not to say that it is an acceptable form of punishment.

Very often, when you hear someone say that a severe form of punishment was their "last resort" with an unruly child you will find that the parents' previous methods of discipline were uneven or almost nonexistent. In my opinion, public humiliation and physical violence do not help the situation, they only make it worse in the long run.

He does seem to be enjoying it. It may have been more effective to require him to make amends to the teacher directly. He could do chores for the teacher, either at school or at home. Something difficult and unpleasant.

Here in Boston Storrow Drive runs along the Charles River and has several low clearance bridges. When renting a truck in the area you are often asked to sign a contract stating you will not go on Storrow Drive. Even with the contracts and lots of signage this still happens from time to time.

Just the tiniest bit of common sense would have served these teachers well. There is a big difference between kids watching something they know they shouldn't on the internet and watching something that has been condoned by their authority figures.

It's easy to say that this wouldn't happen in the US because we rarely hear about these cases no matter where they happen. The only reason we hear about the negative cases is because someone makes a stink and publicizes them. If no one makes a stink we remain blissfully unaware. We mainly hear about the officers who overreact or misbehave while thousands of officers all over the country go about their jobs with level heads and compassion.

No, I'm not a cop or even related to a cop. I just have the utmost respect for the good ones.
