He's doing the exact thing that icebreakers do: power-drive on top of the ice, then break downward. Icebreakers have a flexible prow that flattens out when driven onto an ice sheet, then 'pop' out again to smash against the ice for better breaking.

I wonder if the designer of the first icebreaker ship saw this behavior?
