I decided to grow wheat in my back yard, using wheat berries from our local health food store. Planted in Fall, the wheat grew very pretty leaves and went dormant during the winter, and then came roaring back in Spring. It's quite pretty, and was fun to do. Certainly, having a patch of wheat in the back yard is nice to show guests.
Yeah. I use an eight-bit byte out of habit. There's really no need to go that far, since it would get us up to 255 years old. Seven candles ought to work for anyone.
I am now of an age where I use binary for my candles. An arrangement of eight birthday candles is set in a line to represent one byte of data, and are lit to indicate ones and zeroes (lit candles are ones, unlit are zeroes).
I recently learned that in Korea, there is a variation of a kimchi stew called "Budae-jigae", or "Army Base Stew".
It’s a spicy, savory, Korean-American fusion dish made from an umami-rich broth, Korean hot pepper paste, flakes, kimchi, and American Spam, beans, and sausage. . . . This dish was invented after the Korean war (1950-1953) when the American army was stationed in the city of Uijeongbu, near Seoul. They had their own food on the base, things like canned beans, meat, Spam, ham, and sausages. This food was totally new to Koreans.
Being a nerdy guy, I carried a TI calculator in a holster on my belt in high school. Later, when I was asked if I was trying to make some kind of statement by doing that, I just had to reply: "Well, actually, it just felt kinda natural."
Several times, the guy with the gun actually points it to his partner. Twice while trying to get on the bike, the gun is pressed against the other guy's head! That could have ended really badly for him.
In the Gospel according to Luke, Zechariah is made unable to speak by an angel, until the predicted birth of his son. He did his job as a priest in the temple, but could not speak. Then John was born:
…So they made signs to his father to inquire what he wanted to name the child. Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, “His name” is John. And they were all astonished. Immediately Zechariah’s mouth was opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak, praising God.…
OK. So, why did the relatives "make signs" to him? He could not speak, but he could hear just fine! Just think what he must have overheard during those 9 months, while people thought he was deaf!
When job interviewers ask "where do you see yourself in five years?", I am always tempted to point out that the things that I am doing now were not invented five years ago.
Perhaps an appropriate answer would be: "I think I will be working in the new field of Teleportation Bandwidth Management by then."
