So interesting that his not being aware of the supposed limitations (sleep) helped make his win possible. Our beliefs determine so much of what we're capable of, it seems.

@SparkS: Hehe, oh I get it now! I feel so gullible.

Your post was actually a teaching metaphor about the inadequacy of mental healthcare for veterans who have suffered profound psychological injury as a result of their service, the amelioration of which sad state of affairs I strongly support. I think it's terrible that the people represented by your cleverly-constructed example are not getting the help they need.

Do you have an organization through which you further engender awareness of this matter, some literature I could look at? I'd love to get more involved. In any case, well-played, sir.

@ SparkS: Thank you for your subtle exploration of my sincere questions about our culture and attitudes. This is the kind of measured, thoughtful, judicious personality I want at the command of heavy weaponry in times of intense pressure and in situations where he is surrounded by people that may not see things as he does.

@ Tempscire: Good points all. The Quiverful thing is really disturbing. It's easy (in an intellectually lazy way) to defend their incessant breeding with a "their family; their prerogative" argument, but the fundamental mission behind the behavior is very much informed by an extremely socially regressive model.

As with the expectation of unquestioning praise and validation for those who choose to join the military (based on a manufactured notion of blind patriotism as the height of honor), so there is this idea that anything anybody wants to do, if born of their religion, must also be viewed uncritically.

We all judge, all the time. We all have the faculty of unique discernment. And mine tells me that growing a profoundly insulated colony of submissive females and king-of-the-castle males based on a series of folktale missives is flat creepy.

And if someone wants to argue that my having 1.4 children and eschewing religion in favor of a personal preference for a searching, insecure reality over a fabricated peace is somehow inferior to the above scenario, we can have that discussion.

@Viva: I can't get back to my 1.4 children and this exciting-sounding death spiral you speak of right now because I'm already late for my Narcissistic Atheists with Poor Self Image support group. I almost feel guilty about this, but then I remember I'm a narcissist and my needs come first. Priorities!

Dad's reasoning is just off. Why does choosing to be in the military make you forever and always a special wonderful person who deserves extra crap? I'm not making a point about the military per se right now, but you know, there are lots of career paths that are at least as honorable.

If someone chose to be a chiropractor or a soup kitchen worker because they actually wanted to ease the suffering of others, would we be expected to give them a free ride forever, or do this pseudo-canonization thing that goes on with military folks? Is it because you might die if you join the military? Seriously, I'm asking. Because liquor store clerks are at very high risk for violence as well, and we don't have parades for them.

It's my understanding that small things are perceived as cute so they engender protective impulses rather than aggression or ambivalence. Babies can't fend for or protect themselves, so they gotta work the angles to survive.

I prefer caviar-powered testicle cooling systems for the men and platinum reflector bonnets with built-in imported Icelandic breeze generators for the ladies.

Usually wheel well travelers don't make it, but I suppose it's possible in the way maybe one out of a hundred Golden Gate jumpers makes it.

Anyway, about the box guy: it just feels good when somebody pulls a caper, even if they're bad folks. Like the people that robbed Harry Winston's. Heists!
