Ghoul Friend

(YouTube link)

Disney's latest Mickey Mouse Short has a Halloween theme. Mickey's car overheats on a dark and spooky road, and all I can think about is why would putting the loose radiator cap back on help when the coolant is gone? And who needs a wrench to tighten a cap? Then he's pursued by some scary ghoul that might look like Goofy if it were alive. That's where the fun begins! -via Everlasting Blort

Kyl21, the World's First "Sci-Fi" Popsicle

Image: Kyl21 - via Fast Co.

These ain't your kids popsicles!

Food designer David Marx of independent food lab The Science Kitchen in Berlin, Germany, has re-engineered the popsicle to make it fit for the future. Behold the Kyl21, the world's first "sci-fi" popsicle.

"Popsicles know no age, no gender, no borders: They're beloved all over the world," Marx told John Brownlee of Fast Co., "but after 100 years of popsicle history, it hasn't changed much. We thought it was the right time to bring the popsicle to the next level, making it healthier, prettier, and more functional."

Kyl21 - which is the combination of molekyl, the Norwegian word for molecule, and 21, the age of Marx's intended "grown up" popsicle - comes in geometric fantastic shapes and have flavors ranging from organic to vegan to alcoholic cocktails. Yum!

Halloween Costumes Inspired by the 1950s

Lucy and her bottle of Vitameatavegamin were spotted in Seattle in 2009. Then she was spotted with Ethel in their chocolate factory uniforms. There's also Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge, Audrey Hepburn, and a whole bunch of fictional characters as well in Buzzfeed's roundup of 15 Halloween Costumes Inspired By The 1950s.

Azerbaijan Releases Election Results Before Polls Open

Azerbaijan held a presidential election on Wednesday, but before the first ballot was cast, the Central Election Commission released the election results by mistake. President Ilham Aliyev, who has been in office for ten years after succeeding his father, won in a landslide with 72% of the vote. Jamil Hasanli came in second with 7.4% of votes cast -even before the polls opened. Oops.

The data were quickly recalled. The official story is that the app's developer had mistakenly sent out the 2008 election results as part of a test. But that's a bit flimsy, given that the released totals show the candidates from this week, not from 2008.

No one in Azerbaijan was particularly surprised by the "results," but it was bad form to make the rigged vote so obvious to the world. After going through the motions of the election, the updated results show Aliyev now with 80% of votes cast. -via Daily of the Day

Magneto and Professor X Going out for a Bit of the Old Ultraviolence

It's best friends forever Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. They're wearing their characteristic bowlers. Perhaps they're setting a new fashion. But maybe, as Neatorama commenter spam-me-harder suggests, they're two droogs heading out for a bit of ultraviolence.

The Pulpy Venture Bros.

If you love The Venture Bros., then you know that Henchmen 21 and 24 are some of the most hilariously inept characters on a show filled with bumbling fools. For those that find that level of stupidity impressive, Justin Orr's fake pulp novels about the two characters are something you know you'd love to read if they were made into a reality.

Of course, if you prefer romance stories, then you'd probably prefer his take on the classic love story between Brock Sampson and Molotov Cocktease.

Even if you don't dig on The Venture Bros. though, you should still check out his great gallery, which is filled with all kinds of delightful geek art like this.

I Love The Way You Look So See-Through

Does "Hey baby, how it's it haunting?" sound like your kind of pick up line? If so, you'd probably better head over to GhostSingles.com where you can find the ghost of your dreams -or your nightmares.

Well, actually, that's only half true. You can actually only find love on Ghost Singles if you actually are a ghost -they don't offer any services for human on ghost relationships. On the upside, if you are already dead, you can even search for a ghost mate based on how he or she died or his or her age, since a thousand year old polterguest will obviously never be able to hit it off with a newly dead sprite.

18 Great 90s-Inspired Halloween Costumes for Girls

From Daria to Clueless to Gwen Stefani, this great Buzzfeed article has all kinds of great ideas for girls who grew up in the 90's and those who just happen to love the decade. Two of the costumes are technically from the 80's, but they were both from movies girls of the 90's simply adored (The Labyrinth and Beetlejuice), so they still have their place in this article.

While I was always a huge fan of Hocus Pocus and The Craft as a girl, I think I'd much rather go as Log Lady from Twin Peaks because it's hard to come up with a more eccentricly hilarious 90's Halloween costume.

17th Century Pocket Watch

(Photos: Columbia University)

This unusual antique is called a diptych dial—a type of sundial. Skilled craftsmen produced them from the Sixteenth through the Eighteenth Centuries, usually in Nuremberg. They were used to determine the time using the light of the sun or the moon.

When opened, the string gnomon—the raised device that creates a shadow—is drawn tight. On some more sophisticated models, the string can be adjusted to account for different latitudes. Typically the top section would be used to determine the time using sunlight and the bottom section would be used to learn the time with moonlight.

This particular diptych dial dates to 1603 and is owned by Columbia University in New York City.

Pig Mooncake

Oink! My wife and I found this cute pig-shaped mooncake at our local Asian supermarket a few weeks ago. The cake was for the Mid-Autumn Festival (also known for the Mooncake Festival, because of the tradition of eating mooncakes to celebrate it).

The pig moon cake is filled with mung bean paste and its eyes are made from black beans. As you can see, this one is a mass-produced version. Handmade, artisanal pig mooncake (yes, there is such a thing) is much more detailed (see below). This store-bought piggie even has a golden plastic stand that looks like the lower half of a pig.

We were tickled at our piggie (I wish it were a pork bun, I don't particularly like mooncakes), but like I mentioned above, there are much better looking ones.

Animal-shaped mooncakes, it seems, are popular in Vietnam (they've made bunny-shaped mooncakes, etc.) According to this video clip from Youtube user Vietnam Daily Life, the country's tradition of making pig mooncakes became popular in the late 80s in Hanoi. Watch how they're made:

A Leather Dire Wolf Helmet

There's nothing cooler than rushing into battle with you house sigil on your head (as long as it's not in a mocking way like the way they did it at the end of the Red Wedding). If your sigil just happens to be a dire wolf, you'll be hard pressed to find a more impressive helmet than this leather one DeviantArtist Epic Leather was commissioned to create.

True to their name, it's hard to find a leather creation more epic than this. In fact, the mask is not only made with leather, but the teeth are actually real coyote teeth and the helm can be attached to a pelt.

The Day after the Series Finale

Can I use this excuse? Will my boss accept it? Only if I work for Kelly Angel, the artist who made this comic.

I know that Dexter Morgan, Water White and Rainbow Dash are going into that room. Only one character is coming out alive. No matter who survives, I’ll be messed up. It’s like the flu for my soul and I need the television equivalent of chicken soup.

Closure? I don’t need closure. I need the show to keep going. Maybe Stephen Colbert had the right idea when he kidnapped Vince Gilligan (NSFW language).

The Original Endings to Disney Fairy Tales

What? You want to show that Disney princess movie to kids? Never! The stories that they're based on are far too grim for any child. Would You Bloom shows you the plot points that Disney tends to leave out from the centuries-old tales.

Just think: in two hundred years, people will make children's movies featuring watered down versions of Saw, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Exorcist. Only literary scholars and historians will know the origins of Jigsaw the singing puppet who wants to be a real boy. Little girls will dress as Princess Leatherface for Halloween.
