The Catacombs in Paris are testament to the fact that this has happened before. They dug up the old bodies and buried the bones in old mines that run under the city.
I haven't noticed since it's notoriously difficult for Americans to get their driving permit in Japan (that's another story!), and I usually conk out the moment I hit the highway with my friends. But I'll have to keep an eye out for this next time.
I wonder why, if we count these as the top disasters, the Great Leap Forward isn't considered the greatest tragedy in human history, since it apparently killed more than all the others combined.
Here in Japan, vending machines are everywhere, and when you spend the entire day out and about, you don't really have an option (especially in summer, I will finish off the bottle I brought from home before I even get to the station). I try to reuse my bottles as much as possible, but sometimes I wind up with too many and have a counterful of empty bottles.
This explains a lot. I'm going to have to charge up my old iphone and see if I've been missing texts from people. Although really, if you're using an iphone/smartphone already, why aren't you using a better method, like LINE or facebook messenger.
I wish I could do this on a flight. The guy next to me on one flight got on, sat down and was out cold from Tokyo to Chicago. Fortunately, before he zonked out, I gave him my window seat so I wouldn't have to step over him every time I got up.
