That was beautiful. Thanks.

I'm tempted to object to any proposal put forth by Peter Singer just on general principles.
The solutions put forth by Tig and Fae seem quite reasonable to me.

Yes, my thought exactly. The overall idea is lovely, but this one instance seems pretty sinister...

This isn't news; it happens all the time at fertility clinics when people do IVF. The only difference between this couple and many others I know of is that they decided to call their kids "twins" because the embryos were created at the same time. Given that the kids never shared wombspace, that's a bit of a stretch, but whatever they call it the experience is not even remotely unique.
If the children were in fact identical twins born five years apart, now that would be news.

Seems to me that as a private busing service that is being paid for by Hasidic Jews specifically for this reason, they ought to be able to set their own rules for its use provided that no laws are being broken. Would you go into one of their synagogues and tell them they aren't allowed to practice gender segregation there, either? I do think that they should clarify their rules for any unsuspecting members of the public, though.

I find it interesting that there were several very popular romance titles in that list. It should be a clue: Even movies that cater to women and what they want to see, which presumably generally have a strong female lead, have only minor secondary female characters. That's because, in general, what people find interesting about men and women is the tension/ relationship between them. Not so many people are interested in watching the tension/ relationships between women; they just don't generate the same sort of excitement, and are also generally focused around rather mundane aspects of life. (It should go without saying, but probably doesn't, that of course there are exceptions. A list of movies that pass the test would offer some examples.) Conversely, relationships between men tend to be a little more dynamic, and translate to a more interesting viewing experience.
People usually go to a movie to be entertained. Speaking as a woman, I very rarely find movies that focus on a group of women talking about their issues to be even remotely entertaining.

Of course, this doesn't take into account those nations where toilet paper basically isn't used at all...

And yet, in a twist of hilarious irony, even China is starting to think that its one child policy wasn't such a good idea.

The possibilities are endless - including the negatives. Just think how much more annoying spam and pop-up ads would be when they're literally under your skin. Having your circuits hacked or picking up a Trojan horse would be maddening, too. Not to mention accidentally running the wrong app in a public place.

And to J Fraz, so those people had a few advantages. So what? They still had to work hard to get what they eventually earned. I know of plenty of people who were dirt poor growing up who still managed to live much wealthier lives than their parents, and there are plenty of rich kids who squander what they've been given and end up broke and wretched.
Life isn't fair; that's not a bug, it's a feature.
