The sound for "to spit" sounds a lot like someone spitting (Onomatopoeia), so I can see how that could be passed along. Which also makes me wonder why there isn't some 1,000 year old word for "breaking wind."

Carol Robbins, my 10th grade English teacher, told me I should be a writer. I was a kid who got teased a lot about my funny accent (I'd recently moved to the South from the Midwest), I loved writing because it was a safe way to express myself. Eventually, I did become a journalist and later a broadcaster, but I probably wouldn't have seriously considered going that route had she not given me genuine encouragement. I still love to write, and have hopes that I can get into technical writing someday. So, Ms. Robbins, thank you. Honestly.

A friend's neighbor was complaining about nothing growing properly in her garden. It came out that she'd had her whole yard sprayed to kill bees. "Of course, I did. I didn't want the kids to get stung!"

This isn't the first I've heard about cannibalism during the early attempts at colonization in what eventually became the US. It seems the corporations who were intent on making money from this new land sent too many executives and not enough "blue collar types" who actually had the skills to survive. American history isn't always pretty, but is it fascinating.

In the Army, this is called "Civil Affairs," and we've been doing it around the world for decades -- though it gets little or no mention in the US press. In addition to the "winning hearts and minds" aspect, the troops get training on things they may not be allowed to do in the States. For example: military engineers aren't allowed to drill water wells or build roads, schools, hospitals in the States because that "takes work away from civilian contractors." The same goes for the free (very basic) medical care dispensed by Reserve/National Guard troops in other countries.

When I was stationed in Korea many years ago, total strangers would just reach out and touch my hair without permission. At first, it was amusing. Later on, it was all I could do to say "The subway is not a petting zoo!"

This. As a young troopie, I was worked in Traffic & Continuity (the public service ad making section) of AFKN (Armed Forces Korea Network). That section is where they dumped the newbs so they'd learn how to use all the equipment, and all us newbs were in our late teens to early 20s. So we cranked out product that we thought was funny, but in retrospect, it really was cheesy, silly crap.

Cool splatterfest video, but I wish they'd done it more documentary style so you could see how much work goes into making these special effects. That said, love the show. Oh, and the videogame is unbelievably compelling.

A moron I work with claims he's a published writer because he and a friend wrote some (gawdawful) poetry and have it available for downloading on Amazon. It doesn't appear to ever have been downloaded by anybody.
