I was an illustrator - freelancing at the Times for 10 years from '75 to '85. In that time, I spent a lot of days in the Morgue researching images for my jobs. There were many interesting categories of images I would request that were not part of the job, including airships, streamlined transport, mob hits and car wrecks. There was a long drawer of gruesome auto, train and plane accidents from the 30s and 40s that would never be published in the paper, but somehow was collected and saved. I was the only person who requested any images from this file in those 10 years. (My interest in these disturbing images comes by my school theses of the work of Weegee.) I wonder if the Times will allow any access to these photos?
in the movie: It Happened One Night > Clark Gable made a bread and egg breakfast like this, and called it, "Gas House Eggs". That is what I've always called this recipe.
As someone in the business. Costs have been shaved to the bone in set-up production, with most of the textbook publishers sending the writing, art and editing work to India. This has not resulted in reduced prices, but in major profit gains for the increasing consolidated publishers (Pearson, Cengage, McGraw-Hill for example)… and USA freelance writers and artists becoming poorer.
The moral obligation should go beyond that between the bank and the homeowner, but extend to the community as a whole. I have a hard time feeling any sympathy for folks who are making near $150,000, or more, a year and have gotten themselves into this situation. If they walk, we will end up paying, either directly through higher taxes, further degraded home values or through another bank bailout. I own my house after 20 years, and now find myself having trouble just making enough to be able to pay the property taxes, my family's health insurance, basic utility bills, and keep food on the table.
My art history teacher, of 40 years ago, pointed out how the Mona Lisa smile is identical to that found on most of Greek Archaic sculpture. After all of these years, and after many new theories of the smile, I still think my teacher's observation, and with an understanding of the Renaissance Artist's interest/study of ancient Greek/Roman art, is correct: It is the most simple and elegant solution to the "question" of the smile.
Does anybody remember Canadian Ace? $1 for a 1/2 gallon of piss water. Truly awful in all possible ways. Carling Black Label and Ballantine Ale give you the worst breath (good for peeling paint).
Once again... am I the only one who feels that US currency looks like it was designed by somebody at a Quick Print Shop? Compared to Swiss Francs, for example, there is no beauty or rational design to be found... just security features and crappy typography.
Military and Motorcycle death implications, too.
